Netflix Losing Sound

I got the new ATV last night and so far I'm loving it. I had Netflix though my Tivo for a couple years but the ATV interface is about 100x better and way more responsive when it comes to rewinding and fast forwarding.

I have had one issue though. Last night after setting up Netflix i was watching a movie and the sound when out twice. The video didn't pause or lag but the sound just stopped. I had to exit the movie and restart it. I have a 30 megabit internet connection so i don't think that was the issue. Has anyone else had this problem?

Macbook pro, Dell Xps 720, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

This is an ATV sound issue (not found using other interfaces with Netflix like Wii etc.) from what I have been reading on other posts and googling the issue. Apparently shutting off the movie then resuming it fixes it or waiting out the silence for about 15 seconds or in my case just pausing the movie then
un-pausing makes everything work fine. But the bottom line is Apple has to fix the issue since it seems their is no problem with other media machines

same here, robert, and it's starting to really get under my skin. we've had a roku box for a couple of years and we've never had a single problem with it. streams netflix perfectly. the roku box is on the first floor and our wireless router is on the second floor and we're good to go -- never a hiccup.

the apple tv, on the other hand, is turning into a nightmare -- almost unwatchable now. sound drop-outs more and more, and last night, for the first time, the video just froze altogether. seems to happen with particular movies/shows more than with others (Gonzo is almost unwatchable on my apple tv). the apple tv is on the second floor, just down the hall from our airport extreme, so it ain't a reception issue. having to rewind a few seconds every few minutes is ridiculous.

i'm with you -- if this doesn't get remedied soon, i'm bringing this POS back to the apple store and getting another roku. i'm very disappointed with apple on this one -- love my imac, iphone, airports, and various ipods, but i really am starting to hate this apple tv, and it's souring my feelings about apple.

such a shame.

Yep, 100% sure. I watched The Scorpion King via Netflix and the onscreen info for the movie on the PS/3 clearly shows an HD logo and a 5.1 logo and does indeed light up the Dolby Digital on my receiver. I'm in Canada though so not sure if Netflix is different here or not.

The issue I currently have is that the same movie via ATV2 only shows the stereo indicator on my receiver so no DD5.1. I've called Apple and they are checking into it. If DD5.1 is something new to the recent Netflix launch in Canada that the U.S. doesn't get yet than that would explain the ATV2 problem as the app is probably designed to work with the American version of Netflix.

Can anyone confirm if U.S. Netflix supports DD5.1 with some movies? If yes then Apple has a bug with the new app. Cheers!

I experienced that last night too. I was watching a movie on Netflix and the sound stopped but the video kept going. Then, maybe fifteen seconds later, the sound kicked in again. I wondered if it was a flaw with the movie, so I rewound a little to see if there was an audio gap in the movie, but it played fine the second time. How odd!

Audio drops out of my Netflix on Apple TV every few titles I watch (movies or TV). Just happened again a few minutes ago, prompting my search. I have to rewind several seconds or restart the movie / episode to get the audio back. I've never had this problem on my Roku or anything else that I've watched Netflix on, and I'm not using any custom DNS on my network. So far, Apple TV doesn't hold a candle to Roku for Netflix streaming. If anyone at Apple cares, this is a horrible UX that I have to deal with constantly. It's really irritating. I'm probably going to get a new Roku if this doesn't get fixed soon.

According to press releases, the PS3 was the first device to go 1080p/DD 5.1 as of 18 Oct 2010. Upgrades for the rest of us is expected to last until well into the mid 2011 time frame—that is, assuming increased streaming bandwidth requirements can be met.

(Am wondering if these upgrades have anything to do with the current on again/off agin nature of the Netflix service being seen by so many users.)

We have the same problem with our new Apple TV. Usually happens a few times a week (we Netflix for a few hours a day). I was hoping there was a fix.

Usually everything works great, occasionally the picture keeps going but the sound stops completely for about 10 seconds at a time. Rewinding and re-watching we can hear the sound. Sound is transmitted via HDMI, not optical.

Hope a fix appears.

I have 2 ATV's and this is only happening on one of them. I did a factory restore but didn't fix the issue. The ATV that is having this issue was working perfectly until the last 2 weeks. Every movie I watch, it happens at least once. I pause the movie, or rewind it, to fix the issue.

I did notice that when I did a factory restore, it didn't restore the original version of the OS and had the latest already installed. Is there a way I can restore the ATV back to the original OS? I am wondering if my OS has been corrupted since the other ATV works fine.

APPLETV: I have never been so dissapointed in an Apple product EVER! I don't know if this is Netflix's fault or Apple...or both. But I don't care in the least bit. this is rediculous. All we want is a simple device that streams netflix to our TVs. Why? Why can't you just make this simple simple little thing work!?!!?!

I just sat down to a 2 hour movie...and 2 hours and 45 minutes later...I'm still trying to finish it. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THIS!!!!! I think this is grounds for a recall! Make a product that works! We shouldn't have to put up with this!

Most of these posts concern people who begin to watch content via Netflix on AppleTV and then lose the audio for a period of time while viewing. My audio never begins. Total silence from the first second.

Furthermore, when I exit Netflix and navigate the menus, no audio response (clicking and chiming) can be heard.

Using Netflix on the AppleTV completely robs the system of audio and I have to restart the device to restore sound.

Additional attempts to stream Netflix via AppleTV after reboot result in same.
