From what I've read, sounds like the ATV3 is going to be harder to jailbreak.
The workaround of controlling iTunes on your computer (wirelessly) with the Remote app and using Airplay to play through the ATV is actually working well for me; the volume control on the remote app appears when playing music this way. If you control the ATV directly it disappears, so no volume control if you're streaming from iCloud. As long as you're using local media you're all set.
I notice this as well but you can only control the volume of apple tv via your audio system or your tv. its strange
This does suck. I travel pretty much constantly. In my hotel room is the A TV and a Bose Bluetooth Soundlink. No remote with Soundlink because you should be able to control volume with, say an ITouch. That works great, but it would be great if I could control volume with A TV. Another BIG issue I have is that the Apple TV will not hold on to my hotspot router's IP address. If someone in hotel turns on their hotspot, Apple TV has a tendency to drop current connection. AND they really need to let HBO GO in the mix, not to mention Sling Box...
Back in October 2010 someone asked a simple question "why can't I control the volume of my apple tv when watching videos". 18 months later and not one acceptable answer. Yes there 100 ways to get around it - and very weird that so many of you try to push these workarounds onto the people asking such a simple question - why are Apple forcing users to get around it? It's not technical (ATV Flash adds volume control to the ATV no problem. It's not great but it works). And before some peanut weighs in with - "then why don't you just use Flash" - I'd ask why do we need to hack an OS just to get volume control on something thats ONLY FUNCTION IS TO PLAY MEDIA. Every other media player on the planet has volume control built in. Ive seen hundreds of blogs talking about which cheap receivers or decoders you can buy to control the volume, what a bizarre position to leave your customers in for the sake of a simple OS update. I can't even see that this decision by apple is the usual "you'll need to buy another piece of Apple hardware for that function" (eg mouse functionality deliberately prevented on the iPad, so you need to buy a mac). Could someone from Apple front up and advise if they intend to add back the volume function on their media player in 2012? If this isn't the forum to ask Apple then please someone point me in the right direction. Otherwise - Apple, just add volume control back and make it optional. Simple. No downside. Happy users. (p.s I'm not suggesting that I know marketing better than Apple, virtually no one does, a fact proven by the existance of this thread, but I do know I'm at the point of moving to another platform for video and that must mean they've not got it right for my demographic)
I connnect my Apple TV 3 to my TV and I got a speaker set connected to my TV. My problem is that all audio fra the Apple TV where I can't control audio volume is distorted. It works fine to stream music from my iPad because I can turn down the volume on my iPad. But watching youtube or streaming radio results in horrible sound. If Apple TV had a volume control then I could lower the volume that Apple TV sends to my TV and speakers and the problem would be solved!
Apple: Give us volume control in Apple TV!!
This thread is another example showing that Apple IS NOT LISTENING to its customers!
The main reason for the need of volume control on the Apple TV itself instead of on the TV is that there are screens that have no remote volume control. Another reason is that Apple TV volume control is needed for audio/video sources that are searched by the AppleTV itself, like YouTube, InternetRadio. Those sources cannot be controlled like the sources for AirPlay.
What did you just say???
What is sad about this entire issue is that Apple doesn't seem to care about. I just got an Elgato HDHomeRun TV Tuner for my MacBook Pro using my TV as a monitor, and guess how I control the volume (via Apple Remote control)
So how is it possible for me to use my Apple remote to control volume on a 3rd party product but can't use the same remote to control the volume on an Apple TV. Oh yes I forgot Apple wants us to use a bulky TV remote for that.
WOW how ridiciolus it is to set up a playlist with music + music videos, and suddenly my music videos plays so f****ing loud... Everybody at the party laughting how ridicoulus Apple TV is. LOL...
And not a single comment from Apple. The NO.1 reason why Nokia and Microsoft has lost so many users is exactly because of what Apple is becomming,, they became ignorant of their own customers. Steve Jobs was know to respond personally to users,,, just remember that,, loosers.
Hello ALL!
APPLE! Please do a FIX for new APPLE TV box, my neighbours have already called POLICE 2 times because I like to watch movies at the evening!
Hackers, software guys, maybe you can help us to find out how to change the VOLUME at APPLE TV box ?
Thanks everyone.
This is a user forum, you aren't addressing Apple.
Hacks cannot be discussed here.
The Apple doesn't have control over volume, that would be either your TV, receiver or if using an IOS device to airplay.
"This is a user forum, you aren't addressing Apple" The reason he is asking hackers or software guys.
"The Apple doesn't have control over volume, that would be either your TV" Also the reason everyone is complaining we are aware it doesn't have volume control.
This is a software defect on Apples part not a hardware issue. Since I watch cable TV on my computer using HDHomeRun and using the EyeTV software I am able to control the TV volume using the Apple remote.
Also Viktor Balaban here is a work around but you need to by pass Apple TV. I watch Movies using my MacBook Pro, I connect the MacBook Pro to my monitor and the volume control works just fine.
The computer has volume control, Apple TV does not (so there is nothibg for the remote to pick up on). The audio is output via TV or receiver. It is hardware related.
No there are two sets of volume control, one via computer and the 2nd with the Apple remote. Both very different, so before I watch a movie i raise the computer volume then control the movie volume via apple remote. And there is NO hardware controlling my volume on eyeTV it is software, since my computer has zero hardware connected to it I get the video feed via wifi.
To top it off the 1st gen of Apple TV had volume control. I think I should unsubscribe my self from this thread not to see all the die heart apple follower. The way you guys think is, if Apple did it then that is the way it should be done without questioning it.
Ive been a Apple user for more than 15 years and there are allot of things that apple has made mistake, hence the forums so they can see the problem and fix it. Ive always had the 1st Apple products, iPod, iPhone, iPad etc. My 1st Apple return was the Apple TV and I will not purchase it unless they fix the volume control problem. Apple has always been about "less is better" and now they are telling me to use their product I need to also use my bulky TV remote. Well I just say no and return there product back. I wont use it just because its an Apple product.
I meant audio is output directly via computer and can be controlled the same way. Apple TV does not do this but only outputs via Tv OT receiver and is controlled in that manner.
It did not work for you so you returned it. That's fine
