No Volume Control on new Apple TV

Glad I'm not married to you. AFYI, Jobs wanted LESS, not more buttons on Apple products. Why do you think the ATV1 and the ATV2 didn't have volume controls?
Unless you're going to leave your Apple TV as the ONLY input for your video needs, you're going to need the TV remote handy for changing to the correct HDMI input in order to use the ATV. And if the TV volume was previously muted, guess what remote you need.
Much adieu about NOTHING!
I don't think you're reading the thread Macaby.
The ATV1 did have volume control.
Both with the physical remote using the up/down, and with the volume control in the iOS remote app.
Now with ATV2/3 you don't have that volume control. That doesn't give you fewer buttons, but more (all of the ones on the AV/TV remote) except unlike the iOS remote, you have to go back to the same room as the ATV to use the remote and change the volume.
Yet if you're feeding the audio from an Airport Express, or iTunes, and controlling it via the iOS remote app, you DO have that volume control.
The AppleTV is the only device in the apple ecosystem that doesn't have volume control. You have wireless non-IR control of volume if using airport express, iTunes via iOS remote, or airplay from the iOS device.
Not having it on the AppleTV doesn't make it more simple, it stands out as a lone exception, and an annoying one.
I've just received my Apple TV today and I've just asked for return !!
No volume control ... I dream.
Macaby No one here is asking for more or more buttons. My Macbook Pro remote which is exactly the same remote has a up and down button which when watching iTunes rented or purchased videos, VLC video, Hulu videos etc I am able to control the volume up and down using the Apple remote.
I use my 42" TV for as my external monitor to my MacBook Pro so nothing else connected but my MacBook so guess what I do not use the TV remote at all since I have no use for it.
I use that monitor to work and view videos and currently I use ONLY my Apple remote. So tell me why in the **** would I stop using my small Apple remote and pull out the BIG and bulky TV remote just to control volume that I am currently able to do using my MacBook Pro.
This is a HUGE flaw in the design and not sure how it ever passed QA. If they want us to use a HUGE bulky remote then why is the small remote even sold with Apple TV. Oh yes wait Macaby because Steve Jobs wanted us to use 2 remotes maybe they should make a commercial with the user with 2 remotes in hand.
craigfromcoquitlam You got it right on the money, thank you.
and ghyduart sorry but that was the only fix I had with my Apple TV returning it. Maybe I can buy a used 1st gen Apple TV that supports volume control
Cheers

I have an ATV1 & 2. Neither remote controls the volume on my TV. I suppose if the TV volume were set at a fixed level (say 30%), Apple could engineer the ATVs to boost the volume up or down based on the TV setting of 30% or whatever.

Yes, I seem to remember the ATV1 remote controlling the volume on my old MBP if it was wired up to my flat screen. However, I still need the flat screen remote to go to the right HDMI port and turn on the TV. I guess at that point I could have tossed it out the window, but then I would have had to go out to fetch it if I wanted to see regular TV. Short story is that both remotes sit on the table in front of me when I want to change something.

Don't know how to answer that logic except see above. I venture to guess that only a FEW souls run their operation from a MBP.

Huge flaw? I seriously doubt that. If this is your only reason for returning an ATV, you probably didn't need it.

No, he doesn't.

Yes, you can buy a used ATV1. I see them on eBay for around $50. Perhaps a better solution would be to buy an ATV1 remote if you can find one for sale. I didn't see any on eBay, but I did find one on Amazon.

I just tested my ATV1 remote and it controls the ATV2 menus as well as the ATV2 remote. I don't own an ATV3 so I can't say it will work the same or not, but I'm guessing it will. So, with an ATV1 remote, you can run the volume up or down on your wired MBP to your hearts content or use your TV remote. (at least with the ATV2). Since both remotes (ATV1 and 2) will control my ATV2, perhaps it's possible to pair the ATV2 remote to your MBP.
IMHO, both ATVs are useful. I rent and buy all my video content on the ATV1. The ATV2 is great for the apps such as MLB, etc.
LOL I think you have completely missed my point, I CAN control the volume on my Macbook pro using the new apple tv. iTunes movie, hulu, vlc, etc. My macbook is connected to my flat screen monitor. I want to do the same with apple tv, control the volume using the same remote.
I remember over 20 years ago you could use your cable TV remote ONLY to control the cable box and the volume. Easy set your volume on the TV as you said at 30% then boost or lower using the remote. Are we now going backwards that we need 2 remotes to use apple tv.
Again my TV/monitor is NOT connected to anything but my macbook, I do video editing so I need to few what I have edited on a larger screen. So I do NOT use the TV remote I have zero use for it exept to turn on and off and even that I just push the power button on the TV.
Not sure how else to explain.
"If this is your only reason for returning an ATV, you probably didn't need it."
LOL LOL did you not read that I have returned my Apple Tv since you are right I dont need it... Apple if you want my $100 it is a very simple fix make the remote control volume lol
You must be a reall piece of work. Glad I'm not married to you. LOL LOL LOL
PS Anyone who still used LOL should find another expression. WAY OVER DONE.
Hmmm Im sorry is LOL not used anymore lol, technoligy changes so fast hard for me to catch up. What is in today is out tmrw, (e.g. cable remotes controlled volume in the 90's and Apple remotes does not).
And Macaby you have brought up the word Marriage twice now, is everything ok with your Marriage? Is happy faces in or out not sure 🙂
Look, you're missing the whole point. I just replaced my ATV1 with an ATV3 and I'm horrified to find the volume control on the remote app is missing. Yes, you have to use the remote for the home theater to get the volume into the right range initially, but I have the ATV running into a 3-zone receiver that's piping music all over the house and in several zones on the back porch and deck. And being able to control the volume of the music, from wherever you are, using your phone and the wireless network in the house was incredibly useful, and a perfect example of the whole "It just works" Apple philosophy. And it never ceases to amaze friends when they come over. To have to lug a bulky remote along outside (or walk all the way back into the house and adjust the volume, walk back outside to check, walk back inside to adjust again because I didn't guess right, et cetera) is just idiotic. There is absolutely no reason this feature couldn't be enabled on the new models as well. I can't say it's a deal breaker, but it's going to annoy me (intensely) every time I reach for my phone and then realize I can no longer control the volume.

Really?? Horrified
cause somebody to feel horror: to make somebody feel horror, disgust, or fright
dismay somebody: to make somebody shocked or dismayed
Maybe Apple will update the ATV3 to include volume control. I'm sure they don't want their customers to be horrified. Actually, I guess I was horrified to find out what my MBA cost, but I got over it.
Such a thoughtful response; about what I expected, looking at your other posts.
Don't bother with her chackett, its like feeding the pigeons it will never go away. Although like a gimp without any brains she would be the best customer. I bet if they take away power windows from her car she will be ok with manually raising and lower her window.
And if I had your setup it wouldnt be a deal breaker, but for my needs very limited use between work. And the funnies think I can't even locate my tv remote nor does it matter since I use it only as a monitor.
Cheers
Right, don't feed the troll. Internet 101. I should have known better.
I tried the workaround that several people have mentioned earlier in the thread (using the Remote app to control iTunes on my computer, rather than the ATV3) and it works well to restore the volume control. I even found that, while initially the home screen is shown on the ATV, eventually the album artwork kicks in and then whatever screensaver is set comes on. Don't know if that's new with the ATV3, or the result of a software update after the last post that said only the small notifier would pop up when songs change. So functionally, it's just like the ATV1. Sweet. Of course, it negates the whole concept of iCloud (not having to have the computer on upstairs), but that's not a big deal. And, with the addition of a DAC, I'm back to the full-house functionality I had with the ATV1. A bit of a pain that it wouldn't do these things right out of the box, but at least there are effective workarounds.
I'm horrified that you would bring gender into this issue.
I am surprised no one in the jaibreak community has not addressed this issue. One simple thing of volume control and I can guaranty Steve Job didn't know about this with his health and all. Can you imagine if someone walked in and said "Steve in the new ATV we will remove volume control and force our users to us 2 remote or walk around the house with a bulky TV remote".
If you find a work around please do share, if not I will wait untill Apple puts volume control back, once they get volume back I will be at Apple store purchasing a ATV.
Cheers
