iTunes Movie Rental on won't play on Apple TV 2 (2010)

I have my Apple TV 2 homeshared to my Mac Mini where I rented the movie Iron Man 2 from iTunes. When I try to play the movie I get the error "This Apple TV is not authorized to play this content". I can play other content purchased with this iTunes account on the Apple TV.

Suggestions?

I've been following this and many other threads related to this issues around renting movies from Apple TV v2. In short, it seems Apple has taken a major step back from how things used to be in v1 of Apple TV. Having said that, the only workaround I've been successful at is to:
1. Download the movie to my computer from iTunes
2. Start the movie using the built in iTunes player
3. From the AirPlay icon, switch the movie viewing to 'Apple TV'

These steps enabled me to download the movie to my local machine (which is vastly faster) and still play it on my Apple TV.

Hope this helps 🙂

Rentals from the iTunes Store are only able to be played on the device that are used to purchase the content. If you bothered to read the fine print when renting the movie you would have realized that this isn't an 'error'. This means that if you rent a movie on your Mac, it can only be played on a Mac. If you rent a movie on an iPad or iPhone, it can only be played on them. Same goes for the apple Tv; if you want to watch a movie on the big screen you will have to rent it from the Apple TV directly. Purchased movies ARE able to AirPlay from your computers but NOT rentals.

My experience contradicts Lee3G's interpretation of Apple's movie rental agreement.

Have ATV2 w wireless connection. Just rented "Star Trek (HD)" using iTunes on my iMac. Started the movie on the iMac then switched iTunes speaker selection (lower right of iTune's window) from "Computer" to "Apple TV". Movie started playing fine on TV within a few seconds. This is the procedure outlined by Marty Richard in 4-Jan response to Midijamman.

ATV remote "Pause/Play" button works even though iMac is not in line-of-sight. Don't know if ATV remote is controlling ATV or iMac (via reflected infrared), but there's no need to return to computer to pause movie.

I'm not a lawyer but I don't see that projecting rented movies from one's iTunes library using ATV is a legal problem since the rented content exists in only one device (computer). However, it's perplexing to me that one apparently cannot rent a movie from an iPad and, likewise, project the downloaded rental movie from the iPad to a TV using Apple TV. Has anyone successfully done this?

Thanks in advance for your time and interest.

Just rented movie, "The Help - HD", from my iPad. Verified that movie played okay on iPad then switched output from "iPad" to "Apple TV". On two previous movies this has resulted in Apple TV error message. This time it worked fine and the movie almost immediately started playing on my TV. Cannot explain why this has not worked on two previous movies rented from iPad. Haven't changed anything on my end. Hope this is a stable situation. Ability to view rentals on either the iPad or the TV is of significant benefit in our household.

Rentals from the iTunes Store are only able to be played on the device that are used to purchase the content

that is extremely false and clearly spelled out in the Apple "fine print"... if you rent it on your mac, you can "move" it to ipods iphones ipads and apple TV's...

HD movies rented using Apple TV can’t be transferred to another computer or device though.....

Hi guys. Had this problem for the last few days. Turned out that the date/time had messed up and reset to jan 1 2002. When I switched it back to the right time and date it fixed my rentals with itunes (was getting black screen and nothing was working). Make sure you hit save and lock further changes when you change the date and time. It also fixed a couple of other problems I was having with safari.
