Shows we watch on AppleTV via Home Sharing are not marked as "watched"!!!!

Hi,

This is seriously annoying.

When we watch a purchased show on our new AppleTV via Home Sharing, the fact that we've watched it does not go back to iTunes (or get reflected on the AppleTV). You watch a show, and the blue dot just stays there, it never goes away...

This really needs to get fixed...

I generally, heck probably all the time, play right to the end. And it never marks it as played. But I noticed that if I start something and stop it, then it gets marked as partially played. So I'll try stopping it before the final credits and see what happens.

That is WEIRD if it marks it as played if you stop it before the end, but not let it go to the end. Apple that HAS TO BE A BUG. Or the strangest design decision I've ever heard of.

That is what it's supposed to do. When you listen to songs in iTunes and stop before the end, that doesn't count as a "listened" either. How is it supposed to know you are done if you aren't close to the end of a show? Same thing happens when you watch a dvd if you stop to think about it.There's probably a rule that says something like "If they are less than one minute from the end, label it watched". Since different shows have different lengths of credits, this watched point happens in different places for every show. Let the credits run for a while before you bail and you won't have a problem. Go to the bathroom or get a beer or something.

Ok, thought people were primarily talking about watching tv episodes, which does work for me. I tried podcasts and yes, there is a problem with marking podcasts as watched when doing home sharing. If it helps any, if you subscribe to a podcast via the ATV (Under the Internet section), it actually puts a solid dot in front of the ones I watched, half dot for partially viewed and the unwatched ones don't have a dot. Kind of the opposite of what it does in iTunes but maybe it's because you are watching it as it downloads on ATV vs. after it downloads in iTunes. I'm sure this is one of the quirks they will iron out soon.

This issue is also happening to me when I watch my subscribed podcasts. I called Apple Service and Support and spoke with their Apple TV department. The Support Rep told me that they are aware of this "marked as watched" issue, that he would forward my information to one of their Engineers, and that he would call me back in 3 business days with a solution.

I'm sorry but I don't think you understand the exact nature of the bug. What happens is this: if you watch a video from your iTunes library through to the very end (until the video stops and you're returned to the ATV menu) the blue dot that indicates whether or not the video has been watched is completely filled in, signifying the video is unwatched. However, if you stop that same video just before it ends and returns you to the menu interface, the blue dot disappears indicating the video has been watched. If you also stop this video part way through, but not right next to the end, the blue dot is half filled indicating the video is partially watched. This is not what is supposed to happen. When you listen to a song or watch a video through to the end in iTunes it is marked as played/watched. This is a bug albeit a small one.

I understand all that perfectly. Bottom line is, I watch TV Shows the way that makes watched/unwatched work. I told the people having trouble how it works for me so that they can adjust their habits to make it work while Apple works on a solution to make it fool-proof. That's all. If you don't want to change your habits while Apple works on a solution, then that's on you. I'm more a "make it work" type of person and don't wait for other people to make me happy.
