Apple TV is "Loading" from my iTunes library forever

The first day I used my new Apple TV, everything worked fairly well. Today, however, when I select my iTunes Home Sharing library under the "Computers" menu, I get UI that says 'Loading "MyComputerName"' accompanied by a spinning icon-- which sits there and spins forever.

It never finishes loading my movies and music. I do have over 1,000 videos in iTunes but it shouldn't take that long to load the playlists.

What's going on and is anyone else seeing this problem? Why is Apple TV too stupid to handle this error?

I have the same problem with 2 Apple TV2 (1080p version). I have iTunes on a mac mini and on a Windows PC. My router is an airport extreme and all my deices are wired (i.e. I am not using the WiFi). Based on numerous posts I have see on this and other forums, here is what I have tried.

-restart Apple TV: does not work

-unplug and plug back in Apple TV: does not work

-restart iTunes: works 100% of the time

-restart computer: works 100% of the time (think this is related to restrt itunes)

-Play movie, TV show or song and itunes and use Apple TV as another speak: works 100% of the time

-Do not use WiFi sync on iPod/iPhone/iPad devices: did not work

-Uncheck keep itunes media folder organized: did not work

Observations

-Netflix, itunes store, itunes match all work only library functions are locked

-Remote App on iPad/iPhone cannot connect to itunes library either

-notice 75% of the time I need to restart iTunes 1/day and everything is fine as long as I contineu to use the device. Once I cease using the Apple TV, it may or may not be connected to the library.

-when Apple TV cannot connect to one library, it cannot connect to any (i.e. I was stuck on loading with my mac mini and PC).

-other server (non-iTunes) applications I use on the mac mini still work when Apple TV does not. One example is logitech squeeze server and air print activator,

So in my case, I just need to retsrat iTunes prior to using AppleTV. Personally, I use a VNC viewer on my iPad to do this so I do not even need to go to the computer. I do not like the solution but I am able to use my Apple TV. I just wish Apple would develop a solutioon that works.

I've been hit by this issue since upgrading to Mountain Lion and buying a new ATV3 in addition to the ATV2 I already had on the network.

Prior to this I never seemed to have an issue & my MAC would wake as/when required.

Tried some of the previous suggestions. None seemed to permanently resolve the problem.

After some trial and error I determined that everything would be OK when my original ATV2 was online. My ATV2 is not always on these days as I've moved it to a spare bedroom after acquiring the ATV3.

I've done some research today and it appears the issue may have a potentially simple solution (in my case)

I found these links referencing the Bonjour Sleep Proxy service which helped me resolve my issue.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3774?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

http://stuartcheshire.org/SleepProxy/

I don't own an AirPort base station so I've set my ATV3 to never sleep to allow it to become an always on sleep proxy. Seems to be a good compromise.

Initially, I still had the same same issue and the library would only load when the ATV2 was online.

I subsequently rebooted my MAC with the ATV3 online and the ATV2 offline and since then everything seems to be working as expected.

I'm no expert, but I suspect there is some form of priority/preference that is cached relating to which bonjour sleep proxy the MAC will respond to when asked to wake.

I did notice in the output from 'dns-sd -B _sleep-proxy._udp local' the flag associated with my ATV3 changed from 3 to 2 following the reboot of my MAC while it was online.

Not sure if this is a coincidence or not. I can't find any reference to the function of this flag when searching on Google.

I'll keep testing, but so far since implementing the above minor steps my MAC is waking from its sleep state every time, regardless of any combination of ATV2/3 being online.

Ok, I updated to latest iOS for AppleTV 3, updated iTunes to latest version. Thus far, it has been 3 days and I have had no issues accessing my iTunes library via Apple TV. I have not had to restart iTunes, reboot Apple TV or anything. I gave intentionally synced my devices via WiFi, allowed itunes match to sync and try the other voodoo that people suggest to disable and it still works!

So either 1) I am lucky and I will back the loading screen lock up again 2) Apple fixed the bug and did not list it specifically in release notes 3) apple fixed the bug inadvertently.

In my case the solution to this quite annoying issue was to restore the apple TV software via iTunes using a USB cable. I figured that last time it updated it was using wireless, so maybe there was a minor corruption of the update package. Try it, you'll al regular USB to micro USB cable, te power cord and your computer with the latest iTunes version. Plug it go to iTunes click Apple TV on the left column and then click restore, the download is about 600MB. After it’s done try again.

Some info about my setup:

Apple TV 3rd gen connected via wifi full 1080p res.

Amped Wireless N-Router, running on full N mode.

MacBookPro 13 mid 2011 connected via Ethernet cable, with internal OSX firewall allowing iTunes content. 10Mbs connection.

Latest versions on everything as of this date.

Hope it helps, if it does spread the word.
