Nanos breaking in your hip pocket?

After buying a Nano for my daughter for her Birthday and Christmas combined(still a surprise), my daughter came home today from school saying that she did not aspire to a nano anymore because her friends said that an ipod Nano can break easily in your jean pocket by just bending over? Has anyone heard of this? How durable are they? Will coming days be a celebration or disappointment?

well, i guess it depends a little on how your daughter takes care of it...i'm only 14 but i take very good care of my things. I had a nano for 11 days before the screen broke. I did nothing to break it, but I did have it in my pocket...I just sent it out and Apple is going to send me a replacement...iPod Nanos also scratch very easily. I suggest you buy a hard case for it...

Bending a nano will undoubtedly break the glass in the LCD. I wouldn't suggest putting one in pants pockets, especially not a front pocket, unless you never plan to sit down. I put mine in any of the pockets of my shorts or sweats if I'm out for a walk, but remove it from the pocket before sitting.

i have had my nano for 2 1/2 months and i have had nmo problems exept that my headphones are blown but i have heard that if you sit on it or drop it it will break i have droped mine and it froze and i restarted it and it was fine and i keep it in my pocket all the time so unless you get one from a bad batch then youll be fine

I would consider a case like the iSkin duo with a belt clip. Placing a nano in your pocket w/o a case is just asking for trouble. It is an electronic device and as such needs to be treated with at least a small amount of care. I have read reviews www.gadgetreview.com/2005/09/destroying-ipod-nano.html that show it is rather difficult to destroy one. Do an internet search on "destroying a nano" you will get quite a few hits from users who have tried numerous methods to do just that..

I've dropped it about 4 times.. including stairs, snow, inside a cup filled with water... never frozen, batery life is really good considering I listen to it while I'm waiting for the bus (-11 degrees out there).

I have a case (not a hard one, just plastic), and I haven't taken my ipod out of bag that it comes into.. meaning-> not a single scratch on it .. Great work apple..

Well I have my nano with a very hard case and 2 very screen protectors (one being light film, the other being hard plastic). I hang my nano with the lanyard headphones. This thing bangs into everything lol. But it's still fine and is perfect. If you're willing to get a decent case+screen protector than nano should be fine.

The nano is really fine dropping wise, it is much more durable than the mini that way. BUT, the mini doesn't scratch like the nano does...

I have a mobile phone, it is electronic. It sits quite happily in any off my pockets, bounces reasonably well if I drop it and works if I bit of rain hits it. I have been through 3 nanos in as many months. I use a case, and it used to sit in my suit jacket pocket. They are really good looking, feeling, pieces of kit; but just to easy to break. Apple also make it very difficult to return, and it takes a very long time. I was fortunate to buy mine from Dixons (UK) who have been helpful, in directly exchanging it.
Lets hope Apple sort it out, I don't want to move to creative Zen.....

I had my nano for 2 weeks, took UNBELIEVABLE care of it. I'm 14. I say SEND THE NANO BACK!!!! If your daughter is under 13, DO NOT buy her an Ipod. She may think they're cool and fun, but if she doesn't listen to music a lot, constantly buys CDs, listens to music nonstop, then do not but her an Ipod. They are expensive and for music lovers. I recently bought the Nano and gave my younger brother my Ipod Mini. He lost it within a week and he's 13. My Nano broke, my Mini is lost, and I'm not sending in the Nano to get a new one back. It's a waste of time, money, and effort. My friend who is 21 went through 3 nano's in 2 months. She had a hard protector and they broke from the screen cracking every time. I suggest not buying your daughter an Ipod until she is absolutely sure she wants one. Until then, return the Nano and get your money back. They break and are a piece of junk.
