40,000+ photo library takes forever to load.

My 40,000+ photo library takes about 5 minutes to load on my Apple TV. This is to be expected, because 40k photos is a lot! But surely the Apple TV could use the included 8GB NAND to store/cache the photo list and metadata so that it doesn't have to sync it every time? The lag makes it painful enough to sit through that I end up not even wanting to view photos with my Apple TV.

Yeah, I've found the same thing. Takes a LONG time to load the images, then as soon as you navigate somewhere else, you gotta start over. Not usable.

On the other hand, I have my screensaver setup to show images from a 100 or so image MobileMe gallery. That loads quickly and works fine. In fact, I had my network down for reconfiguring, and my AppleTV started playing the MobileMe images without network access. So it must have cached that smaller set.

So it does SOME caching of images. Just don't know how much and when.

I have the same problem. The Apple TV can see the library but won't load it. I have a new IMAC. 1st mac ever so i'm not experienced. I fixed my problem by rebooting the Apple TV by "Pressing and holding both Menu and a Down on the Apple Remote until the Apple TV status light blinks rapidly". Once I did this the library popped right up.

Up until this, I had even powered down the Apple TV to no avail. My ATV could see the computer library, but it would not load it. Hopefully this helps the rest of you.

Well, I was hoping the 4.1 update would address this issue, but it still takes forever to load a large photo library. I know Apple is paying attention, because they fixed the flaw in the screensaver with randomizing photos, so hopefully they have this issue on their radar to speed up loading of large photo libraries. Perhaps they could cache a file/metadata/thumbnail list on the 8GB of NAND in the Apple TV. I know it's possible, because I have a similarly large music library, and it loads up super fast.

Its a bit of hit and miss. The first time loaded the library (with about 65,000 it did it in about 5 minutes. Almost every subsequent time I have given up after about 10 minutes of loading. There was one time it did manage to load in about 5 minutes. Even when I took the photo library down to less than 100, its hit and miss. Sometimes it will load in 2 or 3 minutes (I have a 95 gig itune library) and sometimes it will hang, but at least it USUALLY loads. The only solution I have been able to come with it to ensure that I never turn off my desktop and never shut down itunes, which is a very poor workaround. I was going to buy 2 more aATV for bedroom and living room and as Xmas gifts for 2 friends, but thats on hold until apple fixes the problem.

Doing a reboot with the Menu and down arrow procedure did the trick. Problem solved.

I have the same problem with PHOTOs loading. tens of thousands of photos in aperture shared thru home sharing thru itunes.

Loading my library very slow (many many minutes, 10 minutes or so). Reloads also often.

Tried closing the iTunes and opening again. No effect on loading speed.

Tried taking airport express off from my network. No effect on loading speed.

In addition to above:

Verified my firewall settings. First fully open. No effect on loading speed.

In addition to above:

Then had firewall closed but itunes to accept incoming connection. No effect on loading speed.

In addition to above:

Tried resetting the AppleTV 2nd generation with menu and download. Select restore to factory settings and update the latest update. No effect on loading speed.

Any other tricks I could try...

In addition to the above:

Upgraded my aiport extreme to 7.5.2 - no effect on loading speed

In addition to the above:

simplified my airport network by having only one (the airport extreme basestation), turned the power off from my airport express + one older airport base station - no effect on loading speed

In addition to the above:

changed the airport extreme to have only pure .n 2.4ghz speed (no b/g compatibility mode) - no effect on loading speed

In addition to the above:

Rebooted the AppleTV - no effect on loading speed.

In addition to the above:

Changed only a few pictures (some hundreds) to be shared to AppleTV from the Aperture library of tens of thousands - no effect on loading speed

In addition to the above

Tried even the "create home share" without pressing the done button. No effect.

Creating the home share again with pressing the done button. No effect on loading speed.

And of course tried quitting itunes and opening it again. No effect.

At the same time access to the net is very fast from AppleTV.

Sharing with Airplay from iPad works great.

Any other tricks to try?

I also regret the lack of subfolders.

WHAT A SHAME!!!!!!!!

PS : what a delight it would be if I could control the sound volume with the sole Apple TV remote...

If you use iPhoto or Aperture instead of just a regular folder as the source, the photo organization is quite nice. With iPhoto, it's organized by Events, Albums, and Faces just like on your Mac and you can choose only certain ones if you want to reduce the number of photos shared. Plus all your folders and smart albums show up as well.

Tell me about it, as a keen amateur I take photos all the time. I have a big photo stash been taking digital pics since around 2001.

Gutted that I can only stream 20k. After putting them all onto my imac and taking over 2 days of my life to put them into the correctly dated events !!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh well it needed doing, and for the first time ever all of my digital photos are in one place.

40,000+ photo library takes forever to load.
