40,000+ photo library takes forever to load.

My 40,000+ photo library takes about 5 minutes to load on my Apple TV. This is to be expected, because 40k photos is a lot! But surely the Apple TV could use the included 8GB NAND to store/cache the photo list and metadata so that it doesn't have to sync it every time? The lag makes it painful enough to sit through that I end up not even wanting to view photos with my Apple TV.

Yeah, I've found the same thing. Takes a LONG time to load the images, then as soon as you navigate somewhere else, you gotta start over. Not usable.

On the other hand, I have my screensaver setup to show images from a 100 or so image MobileMe gallery. That loads quickly and works fine. In fact, I had my network down for reconfiguring, and my AppleTV started playing the MobileMe images without network access. So it must have cached that smaller set.

So it does SOME caching of images. Just don't know how much and when.

Another me too post - I have about 35,000 photos in my Aperture Library, and I gave up after 5 minutes waiting for the photos to load. I have to select only one or two events for the photos to actually load in relatively quickly.

Big disappointment from an otherwise top-caliber device. Surely Apple could find a way to share just the album listing, then each event individually 'just in time' to the ATV, right?

hey
same problem here. I bought the new apple tv for a friend who is an avid photographer. get it setup and the music works great as well as the iTunes store. we go to do pictures however (he has a 20,000+ library) and it is poop slow.....

I've been pulling my hair out over the last week trying to troubleshoot thinking it was maybe anything else except the apple tv (we even ran out and got a faster and more powerful router)....

so disappointing....let's hope apple fixes this pronto

peace will

I have just under 20K photos and just assumed some hiccup every time I saw the spinning ball. I can't believe some people have actually timed it for 2 hours or more. I've always gone to the time honoured Apple tradition of a reboot and that seems to work just fine. This may be an overly simple suggestion but try restarting your Apple TV2 and then load your library again--takes seconds the second time around...

Has anyone seen a specific response from Apple? I contacted their hot line and got a very poor response that basically said, yep...it *****!

I am, right now, going on 10 minutes to load 25 pix. Plus I guess it has to be done all over again any time I navigate away from photos?

The bizarre thing is that I just came back from my son's house and his ATV2 works perfectly.

I fear I have made a BIG mistake by buying an Apple TV - immedately it runs into the "downloading for ever" problem described here from years ago (and I am only trying at the moment with around 15000 out of a photo library of some 60000)

What really amazes me is that, on this the "official" forum for rasing and discussing problems, NO-ONE from Apple has even had the courtesy to address this problem and suggest ways round. I guess there aren't any - other than, perhaps, acquiring iPhoto. Well most of us need yet another photo management and updating tool like we need a hole in the head.

And it isn't just photos - Movies has a similar problem

I have a piddling £1.99 app which does a far better job of accessing my photos and movies on my NASD and delivering them to another device than Apple TV manages!

Please, can anyone suggest ways of overcoming this weakness in iTunes/Apple TV?
