iPhone 4 - Broken glass

So today I had my iPhone in the pocket, and it dropped in a height of 40 cm +-, I don't know how but the front glass broke, up, in the right corner.
Since I live in Brazil, and things here are waaaaaay expensive, I called Apple's official technical support (only one, in the whole country), I've been told it costs around R$925,00 (around 550 dollars), and an iPhone here is 1000 dollars.

So I was wondering, any way to repair it under the warranty?

The iPhone warranty doesn't cover accidental damage.

You can search the web for another company that can repair the iPhone.

The iPhone 3G and 3Gs have a different construction than the iPhone 4. With the iPhone 4, the front glass is actually at the "bottom" of the phone, with the back glass being the "top". Replacing the home button for example requires taking all most the entire phone apart. The way the iP4 is constructed allows it to be very slim and sturdy, but it does not lend itself to easy repairs. The glass, if dropped on the corner onto tile or concrete or other unforgiving surfaces, will likely sustain some kind of damage. The front and back glass are also different. The front glass has the LED backlit LCD display and the digitizer... Basically it's glass glued to glass with a thin film backing. On the back however, it's just the glass and a thin film, with the plastic edge frame, which supports the mounting screw bracket (the 2 you see at the bottom screw into the bracket through the steel frame). If you do not choose to purchase a new one, i suggest getting the repair kit from iFixit or another legitimate source. If your phone does not have the philips head screws on the bottom by the dock connector, i suggest also purchasing the screw swap kit, as it will make this and any future repairs a lot simpler.

Just a reminder, if you do this repair yourself (or someone not apple does it for you) you void the warrantee and any damage caused by attempted repair will NOT be covered. The iPhone 4 is not considered to be a user serviceable product.

Good luck!

Dropped my phone over the weekend. Shattered the front glass! Read this post and did research on replacing, repairing, etc... BEST ANSWER..... I went to Apple store and they completely replaced my phone...with a new one! The BEST part...FOR FREE !!!! I paid nothing, zip, nadda! :-D. I had no insurance either! They said they would only do this once. If it happens again before the warranty expires (one year), I'll have to pay, $199 to get it repaired.

~one happy camper ! Hope this helps.

I just went in yesterday and they rePlaced my Phone too--for free! I was heartbroken when my screen smashed falling 2 ft on laminate in a hard case and was resigned to paying $199 but thrilled they did not charge me. This is awesome customer service. Now I've ordered a Griffin survivor case so it doesn't happen again. The glass obviously isn't as durable as once thought.

My son dropped the Iphone 4 to the floor. The glass was broken. At first, he was really worried about it. Since the warrenty doesn't cover the replacement of broken glass, the replacement cost is Cdn$229 + tax. I set up an appointmet with Apple store. I shown it to the Apple store technical support and asked for help. The Technical support lady was nice and asked me to wait. When she came back, she gave me a new phone to replace my old one (only have about 60 day will expire the warrenty). She told me that my warrenty is not covered the glass replacement. But she gave me a one time exceptional accidental replacement and free of charge. It only took few minutes to switch the phone.

Thanks God for the Blessing. Also, thanks for the very good Technical Support from Apple Store.

My son is so happy. Life is beautiful.

Help! I had my iPhone 4S for just under 12 hours when I accidently dropped it and the front glass shattered. I called Apple support - they said too bad. I went to the store - they said too bad. Why wasn't I offered first replacement for free? What did you guys do to get that? I'm very frustrated and upset at Apple right now.

Did they offer to replace it for $199? I think this is the standard for replacing the glass. I'm not sure but I think some of us have just gotten lucky and they replaced it for no charge. I was fully prepared to pay the $199 because there is nothing else to do. I actually had a long wait for service--20-30 minutes after my appointment, so they said they gave it to me because I patiently waited. Sorry this happened to you:(.

Don't give up on the Genius Bar. After reading the posts here, my wife's iphone4 had dropped and had a hairline crack in the front glass. I made an appt with the Genius in Orlando's Florida Mall this afternoon to give it a try. She went in, they looked, they immediately gave her a new phone and activated everything in 20 minutes. I was about 6m into that warranty. They did say if it had "shattered" a cost to repair would be applied. Cracks were immediately handled. Thanks to all here for pointing me that way otherwise I would not have spent the afternoon taking a chance on this replacement.

I'm glad you posted, pjdm: my new iPhone 4S came in a few days ago, and already has a small crack in the corner from a small drop, my case (of course) should arrive in the mail tomorrow. I live near Orlando, I'm certainly hoping they can help me with this, I'd be very pleased.

It's a little alarming how often the iPhone's screen shatters compared to other phones.
