missed call notification for iPhone 4: how to?

Same as it took Apple 7 iterations of iOS to give us a Control Center Android has had since its inception, it's probably going to take them a certain number of years to add one lousy, tiny single-color blinking LED near or inside the earpiece in an upcoming generation of iPhone.

Said LED that you'll have to wait another couple years until it actually blinks in different colors, depending on what notification it's supposed to convey...

I agree with helenjane: Apple does that on purpose, to keep us tethered to our iPhones, and it's kind of pathetic, really, especially coming from a company that's sitting on a pile of cash so huge it doesn't know what to do with it. There's no technical explanation to support their refusal to add this tiny feature to recent iPhones, so basically, it boils down to marketing moves.

Jailbreaking your devices won't really help, because I don't know of a tweak that does what we're asking for here, not even one that could emulate what the NoLED app does in Android.

My next smartphone could really be that: smart. I imagine it won't embark iOS, though...

Here it is four years later and this still hasn't been addressed. Wow!!!

I am amazed as well , that they still do not have this feature. Love my iphone but this seems pretty basic not to have.

I will keep checking after each ios update. 🙂

I am the same as many others. Switched from Android to iPhone earlier this week, and just never occurred to me that it would not have missed call/txt notification! I am often away from my phone for 2 to 20 minutes, and just don't want to have to pick up my phone every time I come back into the room after leaving it.

So purchased an App called "missed call" without doing enough research, and discovered it is no use, as only works by turning the app on and turning "AutoLock" off, which means phone stays permanently on and flattens the battery in about 10 hours, so that is a solution - not!

After three days with an iPhone I am seriously thinking about selling it and going back to Android. Pity, as everything else about it is good.

Omg i cannot believe that for years people have been requesting such a basic function and its still not sorted. I have had my iphone 4 for only a few days and its driving me mad not having a blink alert. I foolishly thought it would be easily sorted until i looked at the forums! I dont want to be pressing the button all the time to see if i have missed a call/ message. With my BB, I only needed to pick it up if the light was blinking :(

You'll need to ask your carrier about that. Apple doesn't have anything to do with the mobile contract.

Apple doesn't have anything to do with anything here, if you ask me (and even if you don't...): not to propose that kind of simple feature on a smartphone in 2014 is akin to dereliction of duty.

So you're suggesting that Apple should be obligated to have control over carrier's contract policies? That was the only question I was answering.

No, I was just venting a little steam, is all. Apple has been known to coax mobile operators into adopting its own commercial practices in the past, at least on my side of the pond, but I agree with you: if Debs176 isn't sure she wants to keep that iPhone and it's not too late to return it and get a refund, she should go for it.

Have to agree with everyone, the only apple product i've bought was the iphone 5S and was gobsmacked when it didn't even come with a simple missed call/sms reminder on the screen. I can't believe Apple expect us isheep to be stuck to the phone and pressing that Lock screen button every 10 seconds to see if we have a missed call or sms.

I can understand that no notification means more battery life and it is the only way they can use that in marketing to brag about battery life. But seriously, sometimes a missed call could be a serious call, yet you could be away from your phone and come back to see a blank screen without realising unless u happen to press to check.

Even my 14 year old Nokia had a missed call/sms reminder on its screen which i could see without pressing a button.

I have pretty much got the 5S looking how I want it with the required apps, so the one thing i need is an App (something like NoLED on Android) to put a simple coloiured pixel on the screen to indicate a missed event. Surely some developer can do this. I dont give a hoot about Battery life, the 5S easily last more than a day and i;d only expect the coloured pixel to be on the screen till i acknowledged it, so there would be very little battery drain.

Can any developers out there work on this? I know Apple are deaf to this topic based on the start OP date, but power to people, and its thanks to jailbreakers and non apple developers that will make the iphone a decent phone.

Developers don't have access to the private APIs necessary to make that sort of app on an iPhone. Sandboxing also prevents apps from interacting with other apps except in limited ways. Sandboxing is one of the features that makes an unjailbroken iOS device as secure as it is.

There is always a workaround. I'm no API expert, but there are current apps that can put icons on the lockscreen, there are apps that intercept incoming calls/texts which have the option of notifications. The screen also lights up when an SMS/TXT comes in, so there must be a way of taking that missed call and leaving the iphone screen sligtly lit (a bit like the shade it goes just before it goes into standby). This would have little effect on the battery as the user would acknowledge it when they return to the phone.

Again i aint no API-hugger, just giving suggestions on how it could work.

If you find one, you'd be the first in 7 years. Lockscreen icons, dimmed screens, flashing lights, etc. don't meet the apparently deceptively simple requirements.

All we want is to be able to come back into a room after being out of earshot for 5 minutes or 5 hours, and have the phone alert the user that a call was missed without touching it, looking at it, or even thinking about it. The way this is done is by enabling an audible alert that fires every few minutes until it's acknowledged by the user (or the frickin' phone dies!).

Anyway, I'm getting in on the Verizon Galaxy S5 BOGO and this issue will finally be solved for me. I wonder how long it'll take to lose the compulsion to tap my phone's home button everytime I've been away. Anything'll be better than seeing the important call I could've dealt with the day before the next morning though!

I too am considering switching to a different phone. Not the (pricey) S5, though, but I'm fed up with this nonsense. Having to push the home or power button to just check no one has called is just plain stupid, and I'm pretty sure battery life wouldn't be worse than it currently is if a ported-to-iOS version of NoLED existed, for example.

Oh, and how about proposing an option to unlock the homescreen by just swiping it one way or another. BB10 does that, and I've never heard a BlackBerry user complain about battery life...
