I am looking for the application which can notify me about missing
calls or received SMS when the screen of the phone is locked. It seems that it is not so easy to find one at the appstore! Could
anyone point me to app which can do this? Thanks in advance!
I agree with the poster and here are a few changes/ improvements I'd like to see...
1. Trade that forward facing camera that I'll never use for a message status indicator that's function could be controlled in an app on what it does including not turn on at all if that's what you want.
2. Show a "new email" counter on the unlock screen. I'd like to just press the home button once and know if I have any new messages without unlocking my phone.
3. In lieu of a Msg LED... have an option to enable the display to turn on for a few seconds when an email is received. This would be great for meetings where you silence your phone and it's sitting on a table in front of you. Many iPhone cases dampen the vibrate where you can't always hear it.
I disagree with sarcastic posts about why these items are not good simple because other phones do it so Apple/iPhone shouldn't.
I get the feeling the original poster was a blackberry user before.
I have never owned a blackberry myself, or any other smart phone but went straight from a "dumb phone" to an iphone. I agree that some kind of indication like the LED's the BBs have would be very useful (and potentially battery saving as the whole screen wouldn't need to be woken up to check if an email had come in.)
It's all fine and well saying "That's how Apple does it" and I like most of what they do, but that doesn't mean that there is no room for improvement in the future.
For a friend of mine it is an essential issue that on the iphone there is no standard frequent acoustic alert when there are missed calls. This is a reason for her to abandon the iPhone with the next purchase.
Is Apple aware that this is such an important issue for many users? (BlackBerry and other users seem to have this as a standard function)
I agree with your friend this is an essential missing alert, one is not always near their phone and it should have the capability to alert one of a missed call. I sure hope they add this feature as I may have to switch to another phone when contract is up...I love my iphone but need this feature.
I too find the lack of external notification an oversight...but if you examine the phone closley you'll see three l.e.d.'s inthe upper left corner of the phone. even the otter cases leave a window open for them. What if any purpose do they serve?
I'm new to owning an iPhone, and really like that everywhere I turn, accommodations are made for the iPhone. You can go anywhere, and find accessories, apps, etc. It's obvious to me, that this phone is a very high quality device, runs smooth, and if Apple would get out of the way, would have unlimited potential, and does, thanks to jail breaking.
But I'm not blind to the obvious oversights by Apple. I get a kick out of iPhone users actually attempting to defend the lack of message notification by claiming that it's a blessing, and they've been saved from annoying blinking lights that eventually result in you throwing the phone across the room. If a subtle, occasional blinking led drives you insane, then perhaps you should see a psychiatrist. Im sure the same people that are now defending the absence of a message indicator led now, are the same bunch of people that defended Apples decision to not have an "unnecessary" flash led on the 3GS, and no need for grouping icons. Where were all those loyal idiots when the "loss of signal" issue started with the initial launch of the 4? "Well of course it drops calls, because we don't like to be annoyed by people calling us".
Just a couple of other things that are currently defended as "thinking differently", but I fully anticipate Apple unveiling as "revolutionary" in the next iPhone and/or iOS:
1) Auto rotating home screen.
2) Custom text alert sounds.
3) FaceTime over 3g/4g (obviously not a bandwidth limitation)
4) Flash support(ha, not likely)

I´m personally not so in love with my cellphone that i want to press the home button all the time. Furthermore i think one could expect that it is possible to activate a sound/visual warning when there are missed calls/sms ect.. If someone doesn´t want to be disturbed by such, he could deactivate it, right? This is an basic function, that a "smartphone" must have. But it seems, the I-Phone is just expensive and not smart. Either way, you could try it with the "Missed calls" app which at least send a visual warning. Problem: The app must be open all the time (-> battery)
P.S. The moment the app "teacher tool" is available for other phones i will try to sell my I-Phone, because what is a phone´s value if it can do everything exept the things concerning calling?
I'm a longtime Apple fan, but a new iPhone user (was stuck with tmobile for a long time, not anymore)
I love my new iPhone 3GS but my #1 gripe is that it does not have a blinking light for missed msgs/calls/txts. It's not a deal-breaker, but it is a big deal for those of us who are used to having such a feature. And for those that don't need/want it, they could simply disable it. PLEASE Apple, include this feature ASAP.
For those who don't understand what we're complaining about (seems to be many here who do not), what if I'm in the shower and I get a missed call or important text? (those that say "you should not be away from your iphone, ever!" - do you shower with yours?) So I get out of the shower and continue my routine until an hour or two later I pick up my iphone to check something and WHOA, I had a missed call or important text message? If the feature we desire was included on the iPhone, I would notice the blinking light as I walked past the coffee table where my phone sits and I would've immediately checked it out.
It's not a lot to ask, most phones have this. And it is an important feature. They must have simply overlooked it while designing the phone because there is no reason not to include it. Maybe battery drainage? But I doubt that a slow blinking led draws much juice. And it could have settings to disable it, so whats the problem?
Just wanted to give my 2 cents, because I feel like the original poster was jumped all over for voicing a legit issue. Apple worshippers are scary - love the products (mostly), but don't dig the fan club.
Maybe Motorola has a stupid patent on this and Steve just doesn't want to pay them ransom money for the feature. I have had three Motorola phones and an HTC Droid. iPhone 4 is first phone I've had that did not have this feature.
The Motorola phones would even beep until you read any incoming SMS or looked at missed call info. Of course, you could disable this feature.
Apple...if you are listening...this could be a deal breaker for me in the future. I need notification of missed calls. I love other features of the iphone, but first and foremost, I bought it because I need a mobile phone! That means knowing I have gotten a call if I happen to miss one. I can't keep this on my body every minute of the day...not all my clothes have pockets, ya know! You could help keep me out of hot water with my family but setting something up for missed call notification...I would be eternally grateful!
