Syncing iPod Classic 160 GB stuck on "Verifying"

Hello all,

I have an almost-year-old iPod Classic (160 GB), and a couple of weeks ago, iTunes could not recognize it for some reason, so I had to restore it. It was working fine again, until yesterday. The sync went along until it hung up on "Finishing sync." I ejected it properly, and it was still working, although had not been synced, of course.

I tried again today, and it took a while to recognize it, but when it did, it got hung up much earlier, on "Verifying" the iPod. It is starting to seem like I will need to restore it again, but if anyone has any quicker, more direct solutions, please let me know. Moreover, why the sudden need for restoring? The OS software seems to be up to date.

I should note I have it hooked up to my laptop through my LED Cinema Display. My iPhone syncs through the same connection (and cord) just fine, however (although it is developing a problem with the battery level locking up at or near full more often).

Thank you!

Damaged sectors are permanently gone. Scan & fix will attempt to fix problems with the logical file structure. Not sure whether it ever causes pending sectors to be released, or if that really takes a format or some other process that deletes the data that is supposed to be stored there. The invalid temperatures probably indicate that the device has got hot enough to issue random instructions. None pending in principle means that you ought to be able to successfully add data to the drive, though if it falls over when you try and then the numbers go up then it is probably time to call it.

retracts: 4

reallocs: 16

pending sectors: 0

power on hours: 36

temp max 249c

Gets stuck on 2nd or 3rd song syncing onto the iPod... really hope there is something I can do to fix this.

Thanks

EDIT. I tried using a different chord instead of one I had purchased, and it seemed to work. So people, try a different USB chord and maybe it is a simple fix.

I have the same issue with an iPod Classi 160GB. On my new Windows 8.1 notebook computer with the latest updates, updated iTunes, etc. copying music to the iPod seems to hang, but if I leave it sitting for an hour, it eventually copies. With the same iPod, same cable, etc. on another Windows 7 computer everything copies very quickly. Another iPod Classic 80GB works just fine on both computers. Why would this be? Is there a problem with the 160GB model and iTunes with Windows 8.1? It certainly seems so. I have no other issues with any other iPods, drives, etc. on the Windows 8.1 computer and all these devices work flawlessly on both computers, eexcept for the 160GB iPod. Any ideas?

It looks like a driver issue. It seems that LOTS of people have various problems with iPod 160GB Classic models on Windows 8.1, but they work fine on other computers with non-Windows 8.1 OSes. It is a huge pain to have to manage my iPod on another, older computer, because my brand new Windows 8.1 computer isn't covered by Apple drivers yet.

Just a quick message to say thanks a lot turingtest2. your tips here have possibly just resurrected an iPod I had assumed was a paperweight for the last 2 years. It is currently synchronizing for the first time in that period thanks to a DFU reset thingy. It has hopefully cleared up the pending sectors. now i just have to wait for itunes to convert the bit rate (in order to make it fit) and sync 43000 music tracks to it. Thanks once again, because i feel my newer replacement is currently dying, and you might have just saved me a packet of money.

Hi

After synching my 160Gb iPod, it lost all content (no music or podcasts)/

When trying to re-synch iTunes said that the iPod was corrupted and needed restoring.

However when attempting a restore iTunes errored "With unable to complete restore" message.

Follwing tt2's advice, the diagnostics showed 7432 Reallocs so its fair to say the disk in the iPod wasn't in good shape.

I had been aware there were bad sectors due to a windows message everytime I connected the iPod to the PC offering the option to fix the errors on the drive iPod) or just to continue. Also, recently the iPod had been skipping some tracks when playing on shuffle.

Anyway, I finally managed to restore it by persevering with formatting the iPod through Windows(7).

Here's roughly what I did:

- Tried allowing Windows to fix the bad sectors but that failed.

- Tried Quick Formatting it several times (after putting ipod into disk mode) and those failed too.

- Tried a Full Format twice - both times failed but the second time got much further through the formatting process

- Tried another Full Format. This time the formatting completed successfully

- I was then able to use the Restore procedure in iTunes, and, touch wood, all seems to be up and running again. Not only that, I no longer get the windows "Fix drive" message when connecting the iPod to my PC.

Hope this helps someone.
