Stolen iPod

I purchased a brand new ipod touch(64gb w/ camera), the latest model, for $399 plus tax a few weeks ago. It got stolen, I filed a police report and am frustrated at the dead end result from Apple. Is it legal for Apple to conceal who registers my ipod using the serial number? I have evidence it belongs to me - receipt with my name and serial number on it. When I called they said even though they could see who registers it - name, address even their credit card info - that due to privacy they can't share that info. Isn't that criminal to hide the identity of a thief or is it legal what they are doing? I will be upgrading my Blackberry and not returning to Apple due to this betrayal.

Well I do agree they shouldn't just hand out info and that that's the police's job to get. I asked them if the police contacts them would they be able to provide any further info other than who the item is registered to which I can look up myself, and they said no.

As far as those saying how would they know the ipod stolen was really mine, that is very naive, as I've pointed out the receipt has my name and the serial number of the device on it. I was just curious if they could see which location they were accessing wi-fi from, or all the apps I had purchased and downloaded on the device if they could see if they were being accessed and used and from that possibly trace the location but evidently there's nothing that can be traced and I had it for barely 2 weeks so no i didn't have GPS type apps downloaded which I was not aware existed nor that I would need in case it got taken. But anyway I'm not trying to say anything negative against Apple I am just disappointed that a thief has my device and is reading through my private information on it, looking at my private videos and pictures and all. It feels very invasive so I am part venting and that's all I don't expect anyone to solve this issue at this point though I do hope it would happen.

I had changed my password to itunes but for some reason still can use my old one to log into this site when I thought the accounts were connected, but this site is not automatically logged into and they don't know the password to enter so I think I'll be fine on that part. But I did change all my other passwords especially for my email accounts (all 12 or so I had on my ipod) so they wouldn't get new emails but they can still read through all my existing ones. It's still registered to my name which I guess means they still have all my info on it they're reading through which is lame. I wish they'd just delete everything and create a new account and use it from scratch or sell or or whatever, just so I know someone's not going through my personal info. That's the only thing that bothers me at this point. IF they wipe everything then I can move on. I'll keep you guys posted what happens and thanks for everyone's concern.

something they always offer in store and online. it is an email, calendar, contacts, bookmarks, and notes syncing service that also allows you to track your iPhone and send the iPhone messages, ding at full volume, and wipe it remotely. i can't go into the apple store and look around without being offered MobileMe. if you bought from best buy, or some other retailer, you may not have been directly offered it, but it is offered.

I just wanted to update all of you by stating that miracles do happen - I just got an email from someone stating they had "found" my itouch (from the same exact location I had filed the police report!). I am very happy. Funny thing is i just bought a new one and had my name engraved on it so I can't return it back to apple. Crazy timing, but I'm glad none the less.

When I placed my order online, I didn't see any feature that offered to purchase insurance which I wanted to do, which I had declined to do when I purchased the first one at an Apple store. I don't remember an option to purchase it online. Do I have to take it to an Apple store with my receipt and purchase it there and is it too late to do so once I have already purchased it?

And does anyone know of a good tracking app I can install that really works, that tracks where it is should it get lost again?

Thanks!
