iPhone stuck on Apple logo + spinning wheel, even after restore.

I have an iPhone 3G, running on 4.1 (now, before this all it was on 3.1.3)
Since last night it started to act strange.. random reboots, very slow.. etc

I know how to get it in DFU mode, and yes I can restore, but even after it restored with official firmware, it still wont get further than the Apple logo + spinning wheel..
iTunes says that my SIM is locked with a PIN, and that I need to unlock it, but since my phone wont pass the Apple logo + spinning wheel..

Please help, I'm desperate currently.

Thanks in advance!

and yes I can restore

Was that restore from backup or restore as a new device? If from backup, try restoring as new this time. Make sure your internet connection is good...no anti-virus running, no firewalls. Use a high powered USB port directly on your computer.

First, reset your phone:

Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release(ignore the slide to power off).

Then, see if you can force the phone into recovery mode:

Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, itunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new. In your case, select set up as "new".

Restore as a new device.

I've just removed the sim-lock with another phone, so after the new restore I can set my phone as a new iPhone.
I can see the screen in iTunes where you can select stuff to sync with your iPhone, and how much space there is left.. etc etc. Just the usual screen when an iPhone is connected,

but the iPhone itself still doesn't get any furthur than the Apple logo + spinning wheel..
it keeps rebooting itself, repeating the Apple logo + spinning wheel.

Sorry, but I'm out of ideas. If you have an Apple store nearby, make an appointment at the genius bar(it's free). See if they can restore your phone. They have diagnostic equipment that can tell instantly if you've suffered a hardware failure, preventing restore. Apple does have an out of warranty replacement program, cost is $199.

You're welcome.

Do you get a working iPhone with the "out of warranty replacement program" ?

You get essentially a "new" phone. Although refurbished, they are indistinguishable from new, and many people consider them better than new as everything has been checked to insure perfect working order. They also come with a 90 day warranty.
