27" Cinema Display Sound Issues

My apologies for posting about an issue that has already been covered but I think it is important to highlight what seems to be a pervasive issue with this otherwise awesome display.

Like others, mine worked b-e-a-utifully out of the box. A few days into it however, the sound stopped. I have tried the "unplugging for 15 seconds" trick and it is a temporary fix. I also tried, at the suggestion of Apple Supports, restarting the computer and holding down the command, option, "r" and "p" keys simultaneously until you hear two beeps. That is also a temporary fix.

I want to echo the advise to call Apple Support every time this happens to ensure this issue gets the attention it deserves.

Apart from this very annoying issue, this is one sweet display. I watched Avatar on it the first night just to test it out. I only intended to watch a few minutes but ended up watching the whole thing. Terrific! Of course that was when the sound worked.

One more victim here.

I have the 27" ACD and experiencing both issue with the controls and loss of sound and I haven't even tested the microphone. Power toggle works but is not a permanent solution.

Called Apple Care but in my case they told me that they do not know anything about it. I just hope it is something that can be fixed with a software update although at one point one of the Apple Care guys referred to it as a "hardware issue"

Fingers crossed ...

Add me to the list of people experiencing this problem. Just tried to unplug the monitor per feedback on this thread and that seemed to restore sound. Hope there is a permanent fix coming. Also have had issues with reconnecting MacBook Pro to monitor and getting very long delays to get a login prompt back to system - sometime 5 minutes or longer. Nice monitor but disappointed with performance.

besides unplugging the display this procedure works for me to restore the sound.
Go to Sound Preference Pane.
Change the output from DisplayPort to USB.
Press Volume up / down to check if it worked.
Change the output back to DisplayPort.

I also notice the sluggish behavior of the USB port.
JFYI I am on a 2010 MacPro with a ATI 5870.

'norman', the apple support guy i spoke to, now had a brilliant idea: grab my computer + ACD, bring it to an apple store and have a 'genius' look at it. i should be warned though, that the 'genius' can only analyze the problem, if present on location. most likely, however, my computer is broken and the display i fine (quote 'norman'; in the same call he admitted that the problem is known to his superior).
my take away:
1. i can call myself lucky that apple is not producing 30" ACDs anymore, but only 'ultra-portable' 27 inchers
2. 'norman' didn't fully understand that unplugging the ACD fixes the problem for 2-3 days. so he either expects me to sit with the genius at the bar for a couple of days or just didn't care as long as he wouldn't be bothered.

I guess i should follow normans advice and just buy a new MBP. mine is already 10 months old anyway...

***? is there a 'sweep-it-under-the-carpet'-policy in order to avoid an ACD-gate (which it is for me already)?

sorry guys, i know this post didn't help you, but i had to vent my anger.

That is exactly why I gave up calling Apple care.

They suggested the same to me, but if I cannot reproduce the issue I am just going to make a fool out of myself. I went there numerous times and I am at my 6-th replacement due to different issue and now on top of everything the sound issues started occurring.

This is very frustrating and although we vent here let me tell you that no one from Apple is considering any of these posts because for them the forums are just unconfirmed noise as one of their representatives qualified it.

Lets just hope there is some software update that will resolve this.

I'm wondering how many of us are concentrated, say, in SF Bay Area? Maybe flash mob showing up with our little 27" boxes at one of the Apple stores and forming a line would give little more confirmed noise and get some publicity we need?..

Just 10 people with boxes would make enough of a show I'd guess.
