27" Cinema Display Sound Issues

My apologies for posting about an issue that has already been covered but I think it is important to highlight what seems to be a pervasive issue with this otherwise awesome display.

Like others, mine worked b-e-a-utifully out of the box. A few days into it however, the sound stopped. I have tried the "unplugging for 15 seconds" trick and it is a temporary fix. I also tried, at the suggestion of Apple Supports, restarting the computer and holding down the command, option, "r" and "p" keys simultaneously until you hear two beeps. That is also a temporary fix.

I want to echo the advise to call Apple Support every time this happens to ensure this issue gets the attention it deserves.

Apart from this very annoying issue, this is one sweet display. I watched Avatar on it the first night just to test it out. I only intended to watch a few minutes but ended up watching the whole thing. Terrific! Of course that was when the sound worked.

On Friday (Oct 29) I heard back from the Apple support senior advisor regarding the problem, who had heard back from Apple engineers. The engineers acknowledge the problem and are "working on a fix". He said they were interested in collecting more information. He had me run the "Capture Data" application again and send the results, and asked me the following questions:

- Are the Cinema Display and the Mac Pro plugged into the same power strip? (yes)
- Are the Display and Mac Pro, and the power strip using 3-pronged grounded plugs? (yes)
- Is anything else plugged into the same power strip? (yes, laptop charger, external hard drive)
- Which MiniDisplay port is the Display connected to? (left-side port of Radeon 5770 card)

From this it appears they are interested in the powering conditions of the display. I'm just speculating here, but maybe the apparent correlation to the machine going to sleep is actually because of the increased power draw upon waking from sleep?

For my part, I've been observing the problem less frequently. At first it happened every day, but previously it went 7 days without demonstrating the problem, and it's currently been 4 days since the last occurrence.

my setup is as follows:

Are the Cinema Display and the Mac Pro plugged into the same power strip?
-using a 2009 13" macbook pro plugged into the cinema display

Are the Display and Mac Pro, and the power strip using 3-pronged grounded plugs?
-yes

Is anything else plugged into the same power strip? (yes, laptop charger, external hard drive)
-external hard drive and fluorescent desk light

Which MiniDisplay port is the Display connected to? (left-side port of Radeon 5770 card)
-the sole MDP port on the 2009 MBP.

thanks!

Same issue here. Reported the issue to Apple Care on friday. Got a replacement display next monday. The replacement display shows the exact same problem. So I called Apple Care once again. The told me they were investigating the problem as they had received multiple reports.

There is absolutely no reason to reset the smc though! Doing this over and over again is not good for the hardware I was told. There is an easy and dirty workaround. Just unplug the power from the LED display. Wait 5 seconds. Then plug it back in. Presto! Sound is back. Sound will disappear however at an unknown future event. Then you will have to unplug/plug in the power again. This will continue ad infinitum or until Apple figures out a definite fix.

re: "@dlo did AppleCare actually tell you on the phone they are aware of the issue and are working on it? "

Yes they did. Both Applecare agents we dealt with said they were personally aware of the problem and admitted that any replacement monitors they might send out would probably have the same issue.

My sound goes through the SoundSticks, but my Mic keeps quitting... The first time it happened I unplugged the USB cable and reconnected it... When I did that, my computer had a Kernel Panic. Now today I went to iChat and of course the Mic wasn't working again... So I unplugged it again, this time no Kernel Panic. But for whatever reason it keeps coming and going, especially when I hit the Mute button and then take the Mute off, my computer throws a Beach Ball and Freezes the Screen for a few seconds... Weird!

My first post here and I have the same issues.

Bought Macbook Pro 15" i7 2.66GHz with 27" ACD on Saturday 23 Oct 2010. While at home, I have my Macbook connected through MDP to my 27" ACD. I put it to sleep every night and it's worked flawless until today.

-Sluggish volume control and no sound.
-Found this forum and switch audio output from USB to MDP and now volume control works perfect, but no sound.

I guess I will do like everyone else and call Apple. Looks like they'll send me the data capture program and then have me drive 2 hours to my nearest Apple store for a return and I'll be back at it in a week or so.

PLEASE APPLE, GET THIS FIXED!!!
