Apple TV2 doesn't work with Home Sharing

Internet works great (can access Netflix and rent movies on iTunes) but I can't connect to my computer. (I'm using Windows 7) Here's what I've tried...

1)Made sure I'm running the current version of iTunes.
2)Uninstalled Norton and made sure no firewalls are blocking anything.
3)Opened the two ports on my router that iTunes uses.
4)Reset my Apple TV.
5)Turned home sharing on and off and tried opening and closing iTunes.
6)Made sure all sharing is on in my iTunes preferences.
7)Plugged my Apple TV directly into my computer.

Can someone please help? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I haven't been able to find anything on the apple forums that have any sort of solution that works.

Thanks a bunch!

Having a similar problem and REALLY disappointed in Apple. Jobs needs to sort this one out as the quality of service of this product is atrocious and this smacks of complacency and Market strategy over customer satisfaction. Anyway, rant over.

My nice shiny new ATv v2 works fine on connection to Internet, either wireless or wired to a router, but will not 'find' my iTunes library running on an XP computer on a wired connection (wired through a devolo mains plug extender)

It will 'find' the same library (located on NAS) if I connect to it from iTunes running on a MacBook Pro, but only if connected to the wireless network provided by the same router to which the AppleTv is connected. I have tried moving the laptop up to connect to the WLan provided by the slave router to which the XP machines (and NAS) are connected, but the ATv fails to locate the iTunes server in this situation as well.

Note that as the slave router is not running as a DHCP client and all clients on the network see the same IP address for router and DHCP server.

Interestingly, I tried an old (DLink) router instead of the Thompson TG585 and this worked temporarily (infinitely more success that previously) although the results of this were largely inconclusive but point me in the direction of a router configuration issue. Since the (Thompson) router only allows configuration of ports for external traffic, I am stumped.

Any thoughts on alternative routers or why Apple think they can get away with such blatant restrictions, in the name of product strategy, would be appreciated.

Did you ever get this working? I had the same issue today when I hooked up my Apple TV and tried to connect it to my 2 Windows 7 machines. I could not get it to work until I went into the router and enabled Multicast Streams on my d-link router. I guess it was somehow blocking the requests for home sharing even though all my boxes are hard wired. I do have 2 switches chained off of my main switch but it appears the router was stopping it. I enabled Multicast Streams and was immediately able to see my library's on both Windows 7 boxes.

Hope this helps!

Are there any error messages? The last time my Apple TV would not connect to home sharing, I had to turn on multi-casting in my router. Go into your router and look for multi-cast and enable it. Please let me know if it works. I will feel some since of validation and a reason for being. Also, I will feel like giving you a solution that I got for myself, out here on this board makes me somehow approved:-)

Unfortanatly No. Also, I didnt have anything about Multi-casting in my router (AT&T 2Wire DSL Modem/Router)

I am having a hard time isolating the problem due to the following items:

  • My Mac Book Pro connects to the Apple TV fine (So you would think the problem is with my PC Win7)
  • However, my AppleTV Fails to update (which would have nothing to do with my PC and would make me think its a Router issue).

I was so impressed with my initial Apple TV 2 that I promptly went out and bought another one for the family room. Then the connection issues started! I could see my library on my C drive but when I decided to move it to a WD 1TB USB Hard Drive, I couldn't find the library and once I got that fixed, it took forever to load a program. Therefore back to the C Drive and now I keep copies of all my media on a couple of TB drives I have as backup.

Just for info, always have your library backed up to another exterior hard drive, as I managed to have 500 gig of media get toasted when an external drive crapped out. I then had to grovel to Apple to let me download all my media I had purchased from Day 1 for free (which they are not obligated to do!). They graciously loaded all my purchased media on automatic download and within two days and 500 gig later I got most of it back!

My connectivity issues were driving me crazy! I could manage to get to my library and select a movie or TV show from the library, but after 20 or so minutes the Apple TV would lose it's connectivity to the library. My show would stop and it would return to the main menu and show me that there was no connection to my 'Home Sharing". So finally after the third day of this crap, I tore apart my network (Win 7) and started Troubleshooting! I will spare you the gory details of this process but will tell you what the fix was!

I determined the issue was not with the Apple TV but was with the Home Sharing or the "Home Group" in Windows 7. I managed to fix both Apple TVs by doing the following:

a. disconnected both Apple TVs and then restored them both by directly attaching them to my computer with a micro USB cable with nothing else attached (Blackberries use the same cable for sync) and by following the prompts in ITunes (the TVs connect just like any other Apple device);

b. by searching through all the notes I could find about Home Groups, I found out that third party Firewall software (I was using AVG Internet Security 2012) had known connectivity issues with Home Group! I then disabled the AVG firewall and turned on Windows Defender instead (I am not to concerned about Firewalls as I have one modem and a wireless router both running hardware Firewalls before they get to my network, so really the software firewall is redundant).

Once I reconnected the Apple TVs to their respective LCD screens and re-connected them to my library and Netflix, they worked like a charm and have not dropped off the network once and it has been a couple of days now! Now I can watch what I want when I want and not have my I Pad 2 sitting beside me so I can connect to my computer upstairs and close and restarted ITunes to get the Apple TVs to restart!

I have no idea if this "fix" will solve your issues but at least it is another lead for you!

Here is something that worked for me. I was using my .mac account when I initially tried to get my home sharing to work. It didn't work. Then for some reason or another I decided to try to use my .me account and viola, it worked. It could have been that I logged out of my iTunes and relogged in that bumped it into working, but whatever, it works now.
