Apple TV 2 has big problems homesharing - fixes? firmware update needed!

After 5 days of having ATV2, (which is lovely when its working) I'm still having problems narrowed down to Homeshare access from ATV2 to my macbook running the latest itunes.

I've just moved house and got a new broadband router and provider the same day as the ATV2, so it has taken a while to make sure it was not the router (BT home Hub 2), the connection, or my macbook itself.

Macbook - (Running Snow Leopard) Internet working fine with router and broadband, (have removed all network settings, removed passwords in keychain and repaired permissions, restarted and re-entered network info - just incase).

Router - works fine all day, with macbook and dell laptop, Have tried restarting a lot just incase

Apple TV 2 - works fine with broadband and router, and I can browse the online selection of videos, youtube etc fine.

Homeshare - When I connect ATV2 using homeshare to my macbooks itunes account, it works for a maximum of 2 minutes then loses connection. And my macbook which still shows full wifi signal can no longer get the internet, and forgets the wifi password and says its wrong when I re-enter it. Only fix is to restart router and delete network settings on macbook and re-enter them.

So is this homeshare technology screwing up, Apple TV 2 screwing up, or my router jumping in after a couple of minutes and saying NO!.

Is anyone else experiencing exactly the same as me?

Its a shame that the only thing I've found left to try (after searching alot of forums) is when turning on 'Homeshare in Itunes' don't press the 'DONE' button. Will give that a try tonight.

I don't know about the ATV2, but I know my ATV3 caches pictures. Maybe that is where they came from.

On the other hand, I noticed something similar as you describe. At one point homesharing was not working when I selected Computer->Music on my ATV3. However, when I selected Music direct from the main menu of the ATV3, I could stream all music from my iTunes library (and I have about 30Gb music so I don't think it is in some cache).

Maybe this is off topic, but hat brings me to the next question: I've seen something about moving my iTunes library to Apple's cloud service. Would that make it available through 'music' instead of computer/music?

Yes - the main Music icon accesses iTunes store music purchases via the internet without the need for a computer. Non-purchased music eg iTunes CD rips, MP3s from other providers can be 'matched' in the cloud if you subscribe to iTunes Match which has a modest annual subscription for up to 25,000 matched songs.

Doc_daddy, either I missed this before or didn't see the relevance to my frustration, but I appreciate hearing that the Roku 3 can access iTunes. The ATV is very simple and slick, as far as it goes, and lately it's been behaving itself (save the occasional need to reestablish the network connection), but the content limits are exasperating. The only thing about it that I really like is the easy access to iTunes content.

I've been going a little nortz trying to figure out a more flexible internet content/Hulu (not Plus)/Netflix/Amazon solution without getting into the mysteries of Plex or MythTV or something else that's way over my head, and this might bring me one step closer. Still need to resolve the DVR/PVR issue, but in the meantime I should probably just pick up a second-hand Roku 3, and give it a whirl just for giggles.

Is this still unresolved?

I am running an all mac environment: airport express n, apple tv2, mac pro '09 with current itunes, etc etc etc etc. I can't access my mac pro's video library at all from my apple tv2, my iphone, my ipad. NOTHING.

is this STILL UNRESOLVED????????

I can't even figure out how to get my apple express n using WEP. Airport utility doesn't seem to have that option any longer...

Any fixes?????

thanks,

Richard

Whatever the problem is, it needs to be fixed by Apple. I have an Apple TV 1st Gen and never had a problem until around Dec 15th, 2013--now no matter what I do to router, Apple TV, itunes, etc, I can't watch any rented movies because is consistently says I have to turn on home sharing. I've done that. I've reloaded everything. It's not my firewarll, nothing is blocking anything.

Apple won't give me support unless I PAY FOR IT! That's not fair. I paid to rent the movie and they should support their products ALL THE TIME so I can watch the movie.

Apple's solution? Sorry about that, that's a Tech question and you no longer have free support, we will refund your iTunes account in 24-48 hours.

That's just not good enough for me. SOMEONE FROM APPLE NEEDS TO JUMP IN HERE AND HELP ALL OF US!

I have Windows 8 and this never, ever happened until mid-Dec 2013 and I think the Apple update has something to do with it all and they won't interact with their customers--unless you pay them.

Thorougly disgusted!

Hey,

So i wiped my apple tv 2 and no change.

I do notice that i can homeshare from my ios devices from my air laptop, and from my air from my mac pro (where all my videos are).

but i cannot homeshare from ANY ios device from my mac pro desktop. an '09 quad.

all on the same network (abgn new airport express, two older airport expresses added to the network for airplay. other things on the network: a nest thermostat, iphones/ipad... WHAT GIVES?????)

Right now I can't watch any of the movies in my itunes library on my desktop on ANY IOS DEVICE.

Any other suggestions? Seems many are having similar problems...

thanks,
