I have had my iPod classic for almost 3 years, and it has started to turn itself off without me telling it to. It will do this while I am playing a song. I would prefer to not buy another one. Anyone have ideas?
Well the most obvious question is: is the battery running down which is then causing your iPod to turn off?
After a few years the battery will not re-charge properly and the play time will then be much shorter. Check the battery status button while your iPod is playing to see how long before it drops from full charge to empty. If it is quite quick - and that
is why your iPod is turning off, your options are have the battery replaced (either by Apple or a thrid party) or buy a new iPod.
The next most obvious question - if the above is not the problem - can you turn the iPod on again immediately, is it always the same song (or songs) that causes the iPod to turn off?
When this occurred, my batter was about half charged. It seems to hold a charge fairly well, but it is getting old. I worry about the battery dying in it. It's probably cheaper to replace the iPod than to replace the battery, I'm sure.

I'm sure you can check the cost of battery replacement with Apple's repair service page at
https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do and then decide which is your best option. I used the UK repair service a few years ago to replace the battery in my iPod video and I was very pleased with the service.
About how much did you pay to replace the battery in the iPod Video? I noticed that it's around $250 for a new 160GB Classic. Any ideas on repair costs?
I think it was around $80 (US), but you should be able to confirm the cost on the website before committing yourself to paying it.
My replacement was carried out by an Apple authorised dealer, local to me and I know I confirmed the cost before work. They also confirmed (before carrying out the work) that that the battery did need replacement.
