Safari - slow loading on web pages -

Strange: If I click on a web page, Safari begins to load the page (from the status indicator) but then doesn't finish. If I simply reload the page,...boom, the page comes up lightning fast.

(this happens, maybe 10% of the time)

Why is this? And what can I do about it?

Thanks.

Hi all. I have also been having this problem since upgrading to Safari 5. It wasn't too bad in the beginning, but got worse and worse. Finally it got to the point where pages would never load, and last night it kept getting slower until it froze, and after an hour I'd have to force quit Safari. In Activity Monitor, Safari was using 2.3GB of virtual memory, and was monopolizing the CPU. What I was doing was trying to buy groceries online at ShopRite. I had to finish this with Firefox, which didn't hiccup.

I tried disabling plugins. I am using Click To Flash. I've tried OpenDNS... that helped for a while, but then got slow again. I'm on a cable modem, so it's not my connection. I realize I'm on an older machine, but Firefox and Opera are nice and fast.

Also, at work on a Mac Pro, it's also not as fast as Safari 4 was.

So today I installed Safari 4.0.5 using Pacifist, and now things are nice and fast again! Some pages load in the blink of an eye. These same sites were making Safari 5 freeze.

So the problem is Safari 5, and not all these other things.

In case others have this problem: I traced the slowdown to the extension SafariRestore. I normally have 10(!) tabs open, so the extension has some work to do to save everything. When it's disabled, Safari's pretty snappy. When it's enabled, Safari's a pig. Under History, the item "Reopen All Windows From Last Session" can be a substitute.
