iPad wifi connection drops - have tried evereything - any other suggestions

Hi all,

I'm experiencing the connectivity issue with my iPad whereby randomly it will stop transmitting data (ie cant go on the Internet). The Wifi symbol is till shown, but there is no data throughput whatsoever. To fix, I have to turn off the wifi on the iPad and turn it on again.

There doesn't seem to be any consistency to when this happens. It isn't related to coming out of sleep or the type of apps I am running. sometimes it will happen in quick succession, other times it won't happen for a few hours or maybe until the next day.

There are two iPhones, a Mac mini and and Vista laptop on the same network and none of them experience this problem. The router is a Sky broadband wireless router. It is set to WPA security.

I have tried:

- upgrading to firmware 3.2.2 and doing a restore
- resetting network settings on iPad
- restarting router
- changing channel of router (have tried 4 different channels so far)
- switching router from mixed (b/g) mode to just g
- forgetting network and reconnecting on iPad
- moving closer to router
- disabling auto-brightness
- setting brightness to maximum
- changing DNS on iPad

I have also tried most tips on this page with no joy:
http://appletoolbox.com/2010/04/special-report-fixing-ipad-wi-fi-issues/

It just seems like nothing is going to work, and I am considering returning this to Apple in the hope of either a replacement or a fix. This problem is really annoying and clearly and issue with the iPad as many other devices have no problems. Even if a replacement router may fix this, clearly the iPad is at fault here.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? If not, what do you think will happen if I take this back to Apple? Perhaps I can get a guarantee that they'll swap it with the next-gen iPad when it comes out?

Looking forward to your advice, thanks for reading.

Ipad and MacBook Dropping Wi-Fi upon sleeping:

Having the same issue as many of you with my Ipad bought 12/17/10 (IPAD WI-FI 16GB) direct from the On Line Apple Store. I also have a new MacBook (MB 13.3/2.4-CTO) bought direct from Apple on 11/17/10.

Both the new Ipad and the MB drop WI-FI connectivity everytime after sleeping and sometimes during web surfing. I have a new SMC router(SMCWBR14S-N4)installed by Comcast in 12/2010.

Here's the rub, I also have a ancient 2003 Ibook that always has and still does work perfectly with this and the past two WI-FI routers that Comcast has provided to me over the years. It never drops it's connectivity.

I'm not a computer whiz, nor do I ever desire to be. I can hold my own when given specific directions for fixing network issues, but I do not like to experiment and make things worse. I just want the people who get paid well to develop these devices to tell me what to do.

I've tried every fix posted all over the web, read the Princton articles(waste of my time)....I just need a fix. Doesn't Apple read these discussions? Why in the world are they letting us ramble on here with barely any input or retort? Why does a 2003 Mac device work perfectly and two new 2010 devices don't?!?!?!?!? User uploaded file

This is the same issue that occurred some time ago. The iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad fails to connect via WiFi with some 3rd party routers after an iOS update.

Since I have an Apple Airport Extreme Base, my iPad running iOS4.3 connects just fine using the 5Gz 'n' channels and once connected the Internet applications run much, much faster than they did with iOS4.2.

Let's hope Apple issues iOS4.3.1 very soon with the ability to connect to all routers.

I have the same router (SMC WBR14S-N4 Barricade N Wireless Broadband Router) provided by Comcast and I have had issues with my iPad 2 dropping the WiFi connection every time it goes to sleep. I have verified all the router settings are as directed by Apple. What is odd is I have an iPhone 4 and a Dell PC that connect to the same access point flawlessly every time with no drops.

dkgvcc, did you ever get to the bottom of the problem?

Interestingly, I also have found that my download speed is slower on the iPad 2 than on the iPhone 4, however, I'm able to get it on par with other devices (at least speed wise) by closing all of the applications that are supposedly "open" via multi-tasking on the iPad (this involves double clicking on the main button to open multi-tasking, then holding the icons until they get that red delete symbol, then deleting all the icons that appear in the multi-tasking window). However, as soon as Safari is reopened things seem to slow down again. So it would seem that the accumulation of open applications in multi-tasking on the iPad 2 has some impact on download speeds.

If it helps the discussion here, I have two routers on my network (I have Verizon fios) - one is the Verizon fios router secured by wpa2 and the other is my wireless for my tmobile VoIP phone service secured with wep.

The wep connection is higher priority in my list of wireless connections because the signal was a little stronger and I remembered the pass phrase, so I connected to that first. After reading that wpa2 would actually allow me to get a faster wireless connection I switched the fios router to wpa2 encryption and started using that as my primary iPad wireless connection.

This is when my connectivity problems started. The wep connection was always stable and never dropped. Now with wpa2 I'm frequently dropping. Not sure if it is the encryption method or if it is because my wpa2 network is a lower priority network than my wep network. To test this I have "forgotten" my wep network. I will report back on the results of my "experiment".

I had problem surfing at my in laws place using aztech modem/router, after about 10mins, my browser "safari can't open". I tried changing settings but still the same. Every time I need to go to wifi settings to renew the lease and I could surf again.

I decided to try another router 2wire 5012nv and until now it's stable and I could browse without having to go settings to renew lease. So far so gd. My problem probably lies in the wireless router.

I have the same issue with dropping wifi on my home router and have tried most if not all of the suggested solutions with no luck. I do not have any connectivity problems with any other device including my iPod. This is definitely a flaw in the ipad2 and should be addressed by Apple. Would not recommend anyone purchase an ipad2 until this issue is resolved. It is extremely frustrating.

I have 20+ ipads all configured the same with the same settings and same applications loaded. Only this 1 unit was having the problem of dropping the wifi connection. I could make the problem occur by allowing the unit to autolock and then waiting about an additional 30 seconds. Then when I unlocked it the wifi connection would be gone. If I would wait about another additional minute the wifi would come back on its own. There were other times that it would drop as well that did not involve the autolock. Since it was a brand new unit, it was under warranty. I backed it up and sent it in for repairs. The repair depot reported that they could not find any problems with the unit. I restored my backup of the unit and immeadiatly had the problem again. I sent it in for repairs a second time with he same result. What I did to fix the problem was to backup one of the working ipads, then fully erase the problem ipad and then restored the backup of the working ipad to the ipad that was not working. After doing this the problem appears to have gone away. So even though both the working and the problem ipad were configured identically and had the same apps installed there appears to be some sort of software issue. My suggestion to anyone who is having this problem would be to backup your ipad and then wipe it out (under settings do the reset and erase everything). Then set it up as a new ipad (do not restore you backup) and see if you wifi problem goes away. If the problem goes away then there appears to be something corrupted on the ipads configuration and restoring the backup will probably make the problem return. If the problem does not go away you can always restore you back and continue to look for another solution.

Well my solution I suggested earlier only worked for about a day and then I was back to the same problem. I believe that I have found a the solution in my case. Apparently when you connect an ipad2 via wifi or bring it out of sleep mode with a wifi connection the ipad tries to connect to www.apple.com. At our work location we are blocking the ipad's access to the internet, they can only use our local intranet. blocking access to www.apple.com caused the ipads to sit for a long time after coming out of sleep mode before you could start using the wifi to connect to anything else. Apparently the connection to www.apple.com had to time out before you could do anything else with the wifi. by changing our firewall rule to allow the ipad's access to www.apple.com , the wifi starts working right away when it comes out of sleep mode. I realize that this issue I was experiencing is not related to the issues that everyone else in this discussion is having, but I did want to post this information on the odd chance that someone else was in the same situation as me, that they could maybe find it.

Just a quick note, after many irritating attemps to solve the issue, a randome genious posted a solution that has worked flawlessly for me. Basically, it has to do with your wireless router and a function called WMM (WiFi Multimedia). Simply disable this option and believe it or not, even the devices that it is supposed to help will work better. I have an iPad, iPhone 4 and a iPhone 3G and they have yet to fail since I made this change to my WAP.
