Netflix pausing/buffering issues

Hey all!

I bought my apple tv yesterday, mainly for the purposes of watching netflix, so my parents can have the wii back. Everything works fine, youtube, flicker, itunes and so forth, but then when I would try to watch an episode of tv on netflix, every one to two mins it would pause for 30ish seconds and have the spinning wheel going, like it was buffering.

Has anyone else had these issues? If so, how do you fix it?

Thanks!

Don't any Apple tech folk read these posts? It's hard to believe that they are not aware of the problem. What I am wondering is why they don't weigh in on this thread and tell us (preferably within this topic) either: a. that they are working on it and hope to solve the problem with a software fix; b. that they are working on it and hope to solve the problem with a hardware fix (device replacement); c. that there is no hope of solving the problem on their end with either hard or software; d. that it is Netflix's fault and that they should fix it (unlikely, given the evidence on this thread); e. that it is a bandwidth issue and that Apple TV will not work unless.... etc., etc., etc. - in which case we should return the devices for a full refund. Any other options?

Apple does not normally give out progress estimates regarding when a problem will be fixed. Hardly anybody does; with computers, by the time you understand a computer problem well enough to give a reliable estimate of how long it will take to solve it, you are generally on the verge of actually fixing it.

The problem may be your internet service. I was having the same problem, using AT&T U-verse to connect to the internet. Since having the technicians out (who repaired some outside wires and swapped the 2Wire modem, my problems have seemingly disappeared. I hope that I am not saying this too soon. They only came out today, but the connection drops have ceased altogether so far, whereas before it was happening every several minutes.

Check your internet connection and make sure that there is continuous streaming.

It's not the ISP as far as I can tell. I have FiOS 15/5 with fiber to my condo unit. I've given the AppleTV a static IP and have connected via ethernet and a very low latency switch. I have tested my bandwidth while the problem is occurring and it's fine. I have literally watched the exact same content on my MacBook Pro and my AppleTV at the exact same time and the AppleTV stalls while the MacBook Pro has no problems.

We know its not an internet issue , in many cases, because all our other gadgets, from PS3 to macbook Pro to ipad to mac-pro all work perfectly, whether wired and unwired.

My ATV2 has been behaving since the update. I had not used it for two weeks before, so my feeling was either apple fixed it , or netflix upped server speed.

I dont understand why this hasn't become an issue like the iphone reception. This thread has over 70,000 views, so I know we are not alone. Perhaps posting to technology blogs might help focus the attention of Apple if bug feedback does not.

Thanks for the feedback link. I joined in for whatever good it might do and just left a comment to express my frustration about a product that doesn't work as advertised and a corporate attitude that ignores both the customers and the problem.

I walked into an Apple Store yesterday for a genius-bar appointment with my cute little hockey puck in my hand and had the opportunity to watch the spring-break crowd in frantic excitement over the latest iwhatever that we all supposedly can't do without. At one point I held it up and pretended to text with it. A few bystanders actually showed interest, like, "What is that?" In retrospect, I'm sorry, but the Devil made me do it.

The genius offered to test it, of course, but admitted up front the futility in doing that. I guess it's just a mystery, and as far as we know, they have no detectives to assign to the case.

Maybe we should ask for an Apple Special Victims Unit?

I've also been having trouble with Netflix buffering too much since I updated to 4.2. It would stop to buffer too many times throughout a show - not every time but often enough for Netfilx to be almost unwatchable.

IIRC Dolby Digital was set to 'auto' after the update. I switched it to 'off' a few days ago and haven't had any major problems since. It's reproducible for me - I switched Dolby Digital between 'auto' and 'off' several times and auto gets buffered Netflix while leaving it off holds the (SD) stream consistently to the end.

YMMV
