Apple TV (v2) displays subtitles too low on TV screen

Following some hints on the Apple Discussions, I was able to enable the subtitles on my DVD rip by changing the file extension to .m4v instead of .mp4, however when viewing the movies on the new Apple TV, they are too low on the bottom of the screen and get cut off.

Is this a bug in the Apple TV or is it something I can fix when doing a rip from Handbrake?

I found the same problem. Subtitles work fine on ATV but are too low on ATV2. This for my Handbrake-converted DVD-to-M4V files. Looks like a bug which I am sure Apple will fix.

It seems like it the text encoding type may well be the issue.

Overscan is disabled on my tv - but again, the issue raises itself on 21:9 material as well which overscan couldn't cause an issue with as the subtitle pops up on the image and not in the black bar / border.

Either way - apple need to address this - a lot of older LCD TV's don't support overscan enabling or disabling.

John.

When you say it's fixed in 4.3 beta do you mean IOS4.3 which is actually v4.2 that was just released? I just updated to v4.2 with yesterdays release and the second line of subs is still being cut off by the appletv2. The subs display perfectly when playing in both itunes and in quicktime player which leads me to believe this is still a bug with the appletv2. It's not an issue with my television or overscan as I've tried all screen sizes and it's the same on all. I'm converting in Handbrake and all my software is up to date. Anyone have any new insight into this issue??? Thanks!

I still have this issue as well. It's an issue with my two ATV2s and in iTunes. Playing the same file with VLC shows both lines of the subtitle, however there is a larger gap between the two lines. So perhaps it's an issue with Handbrake which was used to encode the movie or the SRT. Any ideas for how to clean up these subs if in fact they're the problem? Has anyone else tried their problem movies in VLC?

Hi mbalson, I can confirm the same issue (playing a video in VLC with two subtitle lines with an empty line in between).

This whole problem is silly because the 1st AppleTV worked Just Fine with multiple subtitle lines, whereas the AppleTV2 doesn't with exactly the same videos.

Hence, not a TV issue, Apple needs to fix this problem.
