Apple TV (v2) displays subtitles too low on TV screen

Following some hints on the Apple Discussions, I was able to enable the subtitles on my DVD rip by changing the file extension to .m4v instead of .mp4, however when viewing the movies on the new Apple TV, they are too low on the bottom of the screen and get cut off.

Is this a bug in the Apple TV or is it something I can fix when doing a rip from Handbrake?

I found the same problem. Subtitles work fine on ATV but are too low on ATV2. This for my Handbrake-converted DVD-to-M4V files. Looks like a bug which I am sure Apple will fix.

I may have figured out a really simple fix for this two line subtitle issue.

Open the problem m4v or mp4 with subler and export the subtitle to an srt file, delete the original subtitle item while you have the file open and save. Reopen the same m4v file and drag the exported srt file back into the m4v/mp4 and resave it. If you have multiple subtitles in one video file you may need to play around with the Alternate Group etc.

For some reason this takes the gap out from between the two lines and all line are now visible in quicktime/itunes/ATV2.

Hope this helps!

I have this same problem both with AppleTV2 and the new AppleTV3, that when adding subtitles to something in Handbrake, the bottom line of them disappears and occasionally a subtitle just doesn't show up.

I just downloaded subler because I want to give your fix a try, but how exactly do you export the subtitle to an .srt file? I don't see any option for that. Also, I'm looking at the Visual Settings in the movie I just opened up and I'm wondering if it's possible to simply change a setting in here (while the subtitle track is selected up above) that might perhaps extend the subtitle window on my TV screen?

I tried this:

I used subler and in the subtitles preferences adjusted the offset from 804 to 744. This moved the subtitles higher up on my video and made both lines visible. but unfortunately on the Apple TV 3, like the ATV2, it hasn't made any change on my TV: subtitles are still at the bottom and still show only the first line.
