The Average Lifetime of an iMac?

Hello everyone!

I bought my first Quadra in 1992 and it lasted 10 years at which time I replaced it with a G4 Tower which I am running presently. After dutiful research, I am about to buy a new iMac 21.5 because I don't feel I need the flexibility or power anymore that comes with the bigger machines.

However, I happened to run across a statement that someone made saying that the average life of an iMac is only three years. I was wondering how true this is because three years is not a long time.

Any thoughts on this question is greatly appreciated.

I'm sure if I looked hard enough on the Internet I could find someone that posts gold is lying in the streets free to be picked up, complete with pictures and testimonials. 🙂 However that doesn't make it true.

What you read is someone's opinion, the information you are seeking simply is not available. This is a user to user forum so all you will get is opinions on this. My iMac is 3 years old this month and works as well today as it did the day I got it. If you read on these forums about problems and come to the conclusions Macs have problems that would not accurately reflect the vast majority of Mac owners in the world. IMHO the statement you read is hogwash and has no credibility.

I would be extremely confident about buy any new iMac and having it last many years, as long as the machine is cared for the way Apple recommends there is no reason to doubt it wouldn't last.

Rich: I suspect you'd get a lot more responses by posting your question in the appropriate iMac forum for the model you're considering. This is a MacBook Pro forum.

I think if yo do buy the iMac, you'll be delightfully surprised at the way it runs rings around your antique high-end machines.

Bee,

That's good to know because I don't enjoy buying things for the short run. I always buy enough in a computer that I know will last me for quite awhile. By doing this, I'm able to use my computer for a long time even though they are almost obsolete upon leaving the store.

I thought that it might be the intensity of the heat generated by the iMac that might have something to do with its possible early demise.

Roger,

First of all, I'm sorry that I am apparently in a Macbook forum instead of an iMac forum. Being a senior citizen, I sometimes do things like that.

I'm about to pull the trigger and buy the iMac and a new external hard drive along with new software for 10.6 and I'm glad to hear that the iMac should last a long time. After running my other computers for 10 years and 8 years on my present one, 3 years seemed not worth the investment.

Thanks to all for your comments. I have used the iMac at my local Apple store and was quite impressed with it. It's compact and reasonably priced and just about all I need right now. The statement I had read a couple days ago about its life was like being thrown a curve ball but now I can proceed with my purchase. Thanks again.

AppleCare extends the original warranty to three years from the original date of purchase and also provides 3 years of telephone support. It can ONLY be purchased once. IMHO it's a wise thing to get, while I haven't haven't had to have my machine repaired I've used the phone support on numerous occasions to get questions answered so I think my money was well spent.

One piece of advice if the OP does decide to get AppleCare don't buy it directly from Apple, you can find it for less on Amazon.

I have never gotten the extended warranty in the past but I do intend to get it with this new iMac.
I think that computers and their software have gotten so sophisticated that you almost have to have it today.

And also I was aware about the availability of AppleCare from Amazon and I also know that sometimes Apple and other third parties will negotiate a little on its price if you are making a big purchase.

Thanks to all in this discussion for sharing your thoughts.
