Can someone recommend some good speakers for iMac?

Hello everyone,

I have had my new iMac for about a month and I love it. I am looking for some quality speakers for it now. I would say my price range would be $200. I will use them for watching movies, playing music, as well as I am starting to get into garage band as well and make songs, although they aren't that good at the moment. I figured this was the right forum to come to, it seems everyone is very knowledgable to music and sound. So, can someone recommend some great speakers for me? I am leaning towards a desktop setup, and are there any that make use of the built in optical audio output on the imac? Thank you all for your help.

-Matt

If you have a Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, CompUSA, Apple Store (etc etc) within a reasonable distance, I'd suggesting taking a listen to some of the computer speaker sets they have.

It definitely doesn't sound to me like you want true "Studio Monitors", you just want speakers that sound good _to you_, and the best way to find them to to audition a bunch at a store if possible.

and, though totally OT:

(Spider, my last word on this:
- I never insulted or flamed you.
- I didn't "hijack" this thread, but I replied to one of your earlier posts - to the parts that had very little to do with the thread's topic (which I nevertheless found interesting).
- I find it perfectly okay to stray away from the literal topic of a thread a little, something that you do all the time (again, which I find interesting, though I might not agree).
- You should be able to tolerate an opinion that differs form yours. Take it easy.)

I only use the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system for general listening (CD's, iTunes, etc.) They are after all a multimedia computer speaker system. They are not designed for nearfield studio monitoring or mixing, and I have them connected to the audio out port on my Mac. For monitoring and mixing in my studio, I use a pair of JBL 4206 nearfield studio monitors, powered by an Alesis RS300 Reference Amplifier, and a Yamaha YST-SW305 active subwoofer. The JBL's and the Yamaha are connected to a Tascam US-428 audio/MIDI interface control surface which I use with Logic Express 7. I will eventually upgrade to a JBL studio sub, because the Yamaha is actually an air woofer instead of a true sub.

Drösser,

Perhaps you might find the time to visit www.amptone.com and educate yourself on the subject of producing guitar tone. There is excellent information about guitar speakers among other subjects. Amptone is a wonderful resource for musicians. I would hope that you would not find the knowledge contained therein to be rigid, trivial, and monolithic as you accused me of being. You don't know anything about me; and I did find your use of the "three words" insulting and objectionable because they felt like attack words instead of an expression of a differing opinion. And your post about ranting, just more of the same, because you were referring to me as if I weren't present. I found that to be hit-and-run, passive-aggressive crap. You can disagree with someone without using an insulting tone, attack words, or passive-aggression. I think you disagree with people just for the sake of disagreement, and that is being polemic, and is not constructive at all. Music is about harmony.
