Can't link Canon pixma MX860 wirelessly to macbook
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I set bluetooth on the menu bar to 'on' and selected discoverable. In my system preferences under 'printer & fax" it is showing the Canon MX860 series printer. Under 'open network preferences' on the menu bar I select bluetooth. It says status: not connected. It says 'default' but the boxes for telephone number, account name, and password are empty. If I click set up bluetooth device the box 'discoverable' is checked and it says 'no devices' If I do 'set up new device' it takes me to the set up assistant. I click printer as the device I want to set up. This takes me to the Print & Fax section of system preferences where I was before. On the canon printer I have selected return to factory default under the Lan vs USB. It is set up as Lan as default. At some point I am supposed to turn on the printer and connect the printer to my laptop, which I have done. Nothing happens. argh - HELP!!
For starters, you don't use Bluetooth to print via wireless to the MX860. By default the device does not support Bluetooth - you would need to purchase the optional **-30 Bluetooth adaptor and physically connect this to the Pictbridge USB socket on the printer.
So to connect to the wireless MX860 on Mac OS X 10.5 you need to configure the wireless network settings first. This is done with the printer connected to the Mac via USB. With the printer connected via USB a printer queue will be automatically created. Judging by your post it sounds like this has already happened. If you select the MX860 in Print & Fax and then open Options & Supplies you can then select the Utility tab and then click 'Open Printer Utility'. With the drop menu set to USB the MX860 will be shown. Select it and then press Network Settings. This will open the Canon IJ Network Tool that will let you enter your SSID, the encryption method being used and the associated password.
With the network information entered you can OK the settings to update the printer. You then turn it off, disconnect the USB cable and then turn the printer back on. Now it is ready to add as a wireless device.
Open Print & Fax and then click the + button to add. Then you need to click the More Printers button and select 'Canon IJ Network' from the drop menu. This will then show the MX860 and when selected you can click Add to complete the network print queue.
(I'm having similar issues)
I did the steps you mentioned but...I can't click on "network settings", it's greyed out.
I can't go any further
I know it's me..but I am so frustrated with Canon printers I promise, I'll never buy another.
I've tried to tackle setting this printer up wirelessly a few times spending hours each time.
I'm trying yet one more time.

This would indicate that you don't have the Canon IJ Network Tool installed on your Mac. Here is a [link|http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0200082701.html] to it. With this software installed you will now have access to the network settings button.
