This community spirit where everyone feels obliged to respond on behalf of Apple that things found lacking must certainly be things that you don't really need, that's quite annoying. Why respond at all then?
Anyways, the lack of a refresh option for Finder windows is a serious shortcoming. When you mount an FTP server in Finder, it all works quite well (at least recently, since FTP was discovered by the Mac OS X folks), If anything changes on the server you just don't see it in the Finder window. If you are aware of the change, you can't tell the Finder about it. Closing and re-opening the window doesn't help either. You need to disconnect from the server and then re-connect to see the changed contents,
There must be a way to fix this in a future OS X version, it doesn't seem such a big change.
Yeah, I'm not so sure Linux is ready yet (still) which is why when I left Windows I picked up a Mac.
I was an early Windows user and I've used windows since about 1992 (I had a monochrom version of Win 2.x back in the day) and I've had Linux on various machines since about 1998 but when I decided to leave WIndows I spent the better part of a year reviewing my workday needs (I'm a software developer). I finally decided to go with OSX. Just like Linux, I can work all day in the terminal but I also found that for me OSX has a superior desktop experience. About 6 months after I switched I realized that on my new desktop I just work. I don't fuss around with my antivirus or mess with the registry or tweaking it for performance, I just use the machine for the reasons I bought it.
This need to refresh the finder is a new one for me and the only think I have any problem with. I've been using OSX daily for about 3 years and it was only with the upgrade from OSX 10.6.x to 10.8.x that I've had the finder not show a real time view.
The Refresh Finder app seems to fix it: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24714/refresh-finder
Yup, still not fixed in 10.9. I'm seeing a very simple example of this on a brand-new Macbook Air with 10.9. In Finder, I mark three files, right-click, and choose "Move to trash." Do those files disappear immediately? No! It takes a few seconds for the Finder window to update itself. For a moment, you think the deletion hasn't worked, and try to do it again. Really annoying. Windows Explorer doesn't do this. Ever.

Sorry, not sure I understand: I thought Windows Explorer is a browser? Which is different from the desktop (Finder)? Apologies if Explorer is, in fact, the Finder in Windows.
Apologies accepted! Windows Explorer is the file browser - you're thinking of Internet Explorer, which is the web browser.
I'm still having the same problem now that I've upgraded to 10.9.
Today I was tidying up by copying a number of files from a temporary folder into appropriate folders, using drag and drop. When I went back to the temporary folder (which I was viewing in Cover Flow mode) I found that the Cover Flow preview was displaying a different file from the one which had been selected in the text window. It was as though the Cover Flow feature was working on the directory as it existed before the drag-and-drop process had removed some of the files, but the directory listing had already been adjusted.
This is not acceptable behaviour for such a fundamental part of the user interface.
Yes, I agree. This is a big annoyance.
It's so odd too because on my 10.6.x (Snow Leopard) machine I didn't have this problem and I always kept it up to date. I only noticed this issue when I did the upgrade to 10.8.x (I skipped 10.7 altogether). The "Refresh Finder" plugin is a decent workaround but I don't see how a bug with this sort of impact could be unpatched for so long.
Is this still an issue with Mavericks? If so, I am amazed Apple hasn't done anything about this yet.
This has been quite annoying for me as I have been having to inspect temp files a program is creating.
It's not really needed as much as it is in Windows; the OP himself might be looking for a feature he doesn't need, kinda like when people look for Winzip for Mac 😉
That being said, you sometimes do need to refresh if you're connected to file servers. I've never found it that much of a problem to go back then go forward, but a refresh option would be nice (more importantly, a history button!).

They haven't even fixed Mavericks Mail not working properly or the insane memory and CPU usage. Exactly why I downgraded. No wonder it was free. I think this is the least of their worries. It's a minor problem anyway.
Yeah but honestly, how hard would it be to implement? They already _do_ it internally -- all they need to do is add some convoluted hotkey to invoke it that only geeks like me would use (like CMD SHIFT G to open the "Go to folder" bar), and then we wouldn't be complaining on the apple support forums.
P.S. Going back/forward wasn't working for me -- I had to re-open Finder every time. Seems it's cached.
Yeah, I agree it should be a feature and that it should be really easy to add. Just saying that I doubt they will do it. They removed the "open in new window" option in Mavericks unless you hold alt... These kinds of things make me a bit pessimistic about Finder :/
If you want to try to make a difference, you can complain about this on their feedback form. I'd give it a shot if you care about it since it only takes a minute to send feedback.
I found a work-around that has helped me.
Within the Finder window for the connected folder, (which only showed 23 files when there was actually 24,) I created a New Folder called "untitled". That immediately refreshed the window, showing all 25 items (the new folder plus the "missing" file). I then sent the unwanted "untitled" folder to the Trash.
I have the same problem. It's ridiculous, specially for me that have just moved from Windows. Try, for example, resize pictures. The original size and dimmensions will remain showing.
Close finder does not work for me. I have to restart the machine in order to have the info updated. Ridiculous!
I've just found into this thread looking for ways to refresh my view of network drive and it work. I click on the upper left button to show items as icons then switch to list view and I see the new files show up!
Thanks
