10.6.4: refresh Finder window?????

Yes, I agree. This is a big annoyance.

It's so odd too because on my 10.6.x (Snow Leopard) machine I didn't have this problem and I always kept it up to date. I only noticed this issue when I did the upgrade to 10.8.x (I skipped 10.7 altogether). The "Refresh Finder" plugin is a decent workaround but I don't see how a bug with this sort of impact could be unpatched for so long.

Is this still an issue with Mavericks? If so, I am amazed Apple hasn't done anything about this yet.

It's not really needed as much as it is in Windows; the OP himself might be looking for a feature he doesn't need, kinda like when people look for Winzip for Mac 😉

That being said, you sometimes do need to refresh if you're connected to file servers. I've never found it that much of a problem to go back then go forward, but a refresh option would be nice (more importantly, a history button!).

They haven't even fixed Mavericks Mail not working properly or the insane memory and CPU usage. Exactly why I downgraded. No wonder it was free. I think this is the least of their worries. It's a minor problem anyway.

Windows ≠ getting out more, and neither does being a developer. Not that either of those things mean that you DON'T get out more... I'm a programmer, not going to insult myself 🙂

Yeah but honestly, how hard would it be to implement? They already _do_ it internally -- all they need to do is add some convoluted hotkey to invoke it that only geeks like me would use (like CMD SHIFT G to open the "Go to folder" bar), and then we wouldn't be complaining on the apple support forums.

P.S. Going back/forward wasn't working for me -- I had to re-open Finder every time. Seems it's cached.

Yeah, I agree it should be a feature and that it should be really easy to add. Just saying that I doubt they will do it. They removed the "open in new window" option in Mavericks unless you hold alt... These kinds of things make me a bit pessimistic about Finder :/

If you want to try to make a difference, you can complain about this on their feedback form. I'd give it a shot if you care about it since it only takes a minute to send feedback.

I found a work-around that has helped me.

Within the Finder window for the connected folder, (which only showed 23 files when there was actually 24,) I created a New Folder called "untitled". That immediately refreshed the window, showing all 25 items (the new folder plus the "missing" file). I then sent the unwanted "untitled" folder to the Trash.

I have the same problem. It's ridiculous, specially for me that have just moved from Windows. Try, for example, resize pictures. The original size and dimmensions will remain showing.

Close finder does not work for me. I have to restart the machine in order to have the info updated. Ridiculous!

This is a screenshot (blurred areas for the sake of anonymity) of a save destination window and a Finder window showing the same destination. I had this Finder window open after my file had been outputed. The save destination window is there showing my file is in the correct destination, though, it hasn't been updated in the Finder window. Even though I'm able to use the workaround that LucasBC had suggested, it's still a pain.

I've wondered if it's because it's on an external drive that it doesn't refresh/update right away.

Here is an instance when a Windows user would use the Refresh command:

1. The thumbnails got overlapped in my folder.
2. I clicked on the buttons at the top of the folder's window: Show items as List, clicked show items as icons, etc. It didn't "refresh" the formatting. It seems to be in a free-form setting.
3. It didn't "refresh" the formatting.

Window users are used to Refreshing the page which utilizes the system's instructions to properly format the default alignment of items in a directory. It's quick and instinctual for us.

Question: How do Apple users command the OS to reformat a directory that might look like this? Like I said, I clicked the List button, clicked as Thumbnail button, etc.

I've just found into this thread looking for ways to refresh my view of network drive and it work. I click on the upper left button to show items as icons then switch to list view and I see the new files show up!
