No Backlit Keyboard? GLOSSY screen????!!!!!

No thanks, Apple.

Omitting the backlit keyboard was a HUGE mistake on your part. Additionally, the Macbook Air was the last bastion at Apple for those of us who prefer (and rightly so) MATTE finish displays. A glossy display on an ultraportable is like Christmas in July - it just doesn't belong.

I'll be holding out until someone at Apple comes to their senses and re-installs the backlit keyboard. I guess I'll get quite a few more miles with my Rev. C Macbook Air after all......... 8-(

Macbook Air Rev. C, Mac OS X (10.6.4), no backlit keyboard = NO SALE!

I only need a few keys to glow for reference (C for Copy/Paste, 5 and 0 for Numbers, and maybe Period or Comma) so I don't really care if they're visible in light.

EDIT: After posting this, I think I'll make a new thread so people can try/find different ones and post their reviews for others to take into account when purchasing

I am returning mine.

First of all, the labels on the keys are not WHITE. They are grayish, silverish, and on a FULLY lit room they are not that clear/visible. On a dark room, forget it. Second, the screen wont light the keys unless its tilted downwards and brightness is above 70%. Result: cannot see the keys well.

AT LEAST make a keyboard that has white labels. Like 99% of PC and other laptop keyboards! I never been bothered but my Dell keyboard keys, they are sharp white, and am fine with that.. but this keyboard, nah.

Okay,
return yours, but truly, I think you are being a bit over reacting which makes me think:
Did you really buy one? 99% of PC and bla-bla, who are you, a laptop key "whiteness" surveyor?
Yeah, probably the only thing not bothering you on your "dell" was the keys:)
Guys, nothing wrong with the keys, if these guys really use the keys so much they should know blind typing by now... I suspect there are a lot of people here hired by pc companies to try to distract potential customers...

You are funny.

Early morning I look over my keyboard and I could barely see the key labels. This is not a $500 netbook. Not asking for a backlit kb, at least I should just the key labels clearly, as in any other keyboard. No am not overreacting, I actually thought initially its OK, and bought one.

Comparison pics (under a fully lit room), of course it gets worse when its a half lit room, and almost impossible to see the keys in the dark unless I tilt the screen way under 90 degrees.. compare the Windows key with the control key for example:

OK...went from a MBPro 13 to the Air11...

Love the size and the performance seems the same for average use (web/mail/office)

BUT - the key thing really is a loser. Im OK with it as in bed I only tend to use the ipad to read or watch netflix....but if you ever work on a laptop in dim or dark situations you dont want this MB Air - its absurd that the keys aren't even white!

Works for me, just beware if you work in dim situations. You wont like it.

Thats exactly what I mean, they are not even white :P Hence why I returned it. How is the smart guy at Apple who decided that grey letters on a black key is a good thing?

BTW, did u sell ur MBP?? I find it better in every way other than the size/Weight/thickness of the 11".

I figured the MBP is now a little too old to get one, so I gotta wait for the next revision of the MBA, unless a new MBP comes out and its thinner and lighter than the current MBP 13"

Yes, sold my 2010 MBPro.

I travel a lot and like the combination of Air/Ipad. If need to do any lengthy work just get on iMac when I get home. I dont have to do much work on the road.

MBPro is great, but I really dig the size of this air and find it equally as fast as the pro for what I do.

If you can live with the key issue - its a great little computer!

I just received my new MBA. I spent 1 hour looking for the commands of the backlit keyboard. I am now typing with not enough light and having hard time to do it but I really want to express my total dissatisfaction for this unbelievable choice! I travel a lot and backlit display is essential for me to be able to work in any condition.
I really can't believe that someone at Apple, the leading company for product innovation and quality and my personal benchmark in terms of Customer Experience, could take this decision.
When you don't have a backlit display you don't even know you need it.
Then you buy a mac book and you think it's a great feature.
It's an innovation that brings attractiveness to the product (please read Noriaki Kano and the Theory of Attractive and Must-be quality)
But you once you have had 4 mac notebook you would never expect that your 5th one has no more backlit keyboard!
The backlit keyboard has become part of your expectations.
It's now a must-be feature...
You so unacceptable to discover that the feature disappeared, you don't even want to believe it!
I have my new MBA on my desk and I feel totally disappointed while I expected to be delighted.
For me, that's the result of this choice...

Exactly my feelings about it. I am willing to wait 7 months or a year than thinking am gonna be stuck with a non-lit, no-white labels keyboard for the next 4 years. Thanks Apple, you worked really hard to make an amazing product, and when it came to the keyboard, you royally screwed it up. If I work there I would at least put white letters and maybe a phosphorous glow in the dark solution..

Are you returning yours?

Although it's too bad that you had to go through the trouble of spending the money, taking delivery, and now the possibility of paying some sort of restocking fee (maybe), I'm glad to see that some people are telling Apple to go stick it.

I was excited about getting the new MacBook Air as an upgrade. My girlfriend was excited that she was going to receive my older MacBook Air. Apple disappointed both of us that day.

When I learned about the keyboard downgrade, there was no doubt in my mind that this new computer would be completely useless to me. I am dependent on my backlit keys. I am very far-sighted, and have trouble seeing the keys as it is, and I'm always increasing the key brightness when the automatic light sensor dims it. Sometimes the light sensor keeps the backlit keys turned off, and I have to move the entire computer to a different location so the keys will light up again. Keeping this in mind, a MBA without the feature is out of the question and not even worth any consideration.

My 1.86Ghz, 64GB, Rev B, MacBook Air works perfectly well for me and will continue to until Apple fixes the current model or introduces a solid state drive, ultra-thin MacBook Pro - thereby creating some kind of new "MacBook Air Deluxe Edition".
