Linear PCM, Animation codec MOV files are reading as black
Recently, a client gave me some HD files to open up in Final Cut. I have a year old Macbook Pro, 2.5 Ghz Intel Core 2 duo, 4 gig ram (info at bottom is for my desktop). When I opened up one of the files in Final Cut 5.1 it appeared as just black. In the thumbnail image in finder, you could see the image of the video and it played on QT player 10. I don't use this computer to cut HD. But I recently received a copy of an HD show compressed with H.264 and it looks great.
I just bought an upgrade to the New FCP studio so I guess I'll have an answer shortly. But does it sound like the upgrade should correct this?

I opened up the clip in QT qt 10 and QT 7 and could not find Get Info listed anywhere. I could do Get Info from Finder and it told me the same thing that I listed in the header: Codec: Linear PCM, Animation.
It's appearing as black in the viewer? Make sure the view popup is not set to wireframe but to image. Check in item properties the setting for the alpha channel. It should be straight or more likely black.
I upgraded to the latest FCP Studio, and the problem persisted. Then I looked at the Alpha Channel which was straight and changed it to none and the black disappeared leaving the image of the source. Excellent call. Thank you.
