guys, you've gotten way off topic here! all I really wanted to know was if java was being discontinued from snow leopard or not.

Your original question was a bit more open-ended than that. I can definitely tell you that Java is not being discontinued from Snow Leopard. Nobody, possibly not even Apple, knows what Java VM will be available for 10.7 Lion.

At least there is a silver lining. Those of us who aren't Java developers will apparently be able to purchase some very nice machines in the near future when the market gets flooded with perhaps dozens of cast-off Macs from Java developers dumping the Mac.

Hopefully it won't come to that but if it does there will be way more then just dozens on the market.

Sorry, just so hard for a new person to find a place to vent. I don't think the original question has been taken way off base, just answered in different ways. I have verified that my java is current, my pop up blocker is off, and my cache was cleared. I have even googled my issues and ended up hitting a blank wall. I play on pogo.com, have for a few years and when you click the game screen to take you into the game room it gets all the way to the end...then "poofs" the screen disappears. I have no issue on a windows computer using pogo, just my mac and it is driving me nuts. I am so painfully new to a mac wanted one for years I now have it and can't figure out jack. That last sentence was my frustration oozing out. It took me so long to find the serial number then when I did apple.com didn't recognize it...lol. Any advice would be helpful, needed, and followed. In order for that person to stop complaining about where the original question is going if someone starts a new thread about this can you please direct me to it.

I think some of pogo.com uses Flash not Java so if you are having problems loading pogo.com or any of its games you might try reinstalling Adobe Flash Player from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/. Also have you tried updating your computer to the latest software? What web browser are you using? Safari? If not maybe try Safari or some different web browsers.

I visited pogo.com and tried playing a game, everything seemed to work fine.

Thats exactly how I was when I first switched to a Mac. I got so frustrated I almost threw the computer on the floor. But believe me if you give it a chance, and I mean a good long chance, you will not regret it. Now that I'm used to Mac OS I never want to go back to Windows again. Mac OS is a great, clean and easy OS to use. If you need some help you can try visiting Apple's Mac help pages here http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Seems like the fate of Java is squarely in the hands of our "friends" at Oracle. It really wouldn't
surprise me if Oracle fouls Java up so badly on all platforms that it ends up dying a painful death.

Oracle has already lost many of Java's long time Java programmers, including James Gosling, founder
of Java. Whether that is a bad thing or not, only time will tell.

I tried and searched all over this discussion for someone having the same issue as me. I can't find it which is odd or it is called something else. If this isn't the right place, please forgive my blunder. I use Mozilla (current version), I go to pogo.com, pick a game...any game, click on the play now or pick a room version...page comes up, it's loading, it disappears! I see enough of it to know what the screen is but it just poofs! It's gone...I have searched, cleared browser, verified my java is current, verified I don't have pop up blocker. I can go on any windows computer and pull up my account with no issue. Play on any windows system (sigh...my old Sony or even a goofy Dell...no pun intended) with no issue. I try on this nice expensive Mac and I am getting NOTHING!! I am so very frustrated and not sure how to deal with it anymore.

There are two main reasons why I switched to Mac..
1) Unix based and much slicker than X11 Linux distrib.
2) Java UI integration commitment.

Like many others, I do have an influence on my familly and friends when it comes to purchasing technology. The fear about switching to Mac was very often around compatibility issues. "Will I be able to do what I was able to do before" and I thought mainly yes, since we are on an unix platform and can run VMWare and fully Java compliant, and for the rest the OS would allow you to do it no problem....with an announcement like this, what is the garanty that the future Apple OS will even be unix based.

To be honest, despite all the positive theories that may come out of this story, I am still quite shocked by the way this was announced and by the silence that follows it.

I am now seriously wondering if mac desktops are targeted for business developpers (Other than Apple specific).

If, by your statement 'I do have an influence on my familly ( sic )', you feel that may sway Apple towards providing Java in future OSX iterations in order to avoid your family buying different computers running a different operating system, then you will be sadly disappointed. Apple produces several of the best possible computers on the market, but it is ultimately a business that works to certain well-refined principles. The company is also renowned for remaining silent on so many matters - until it suits Apple to release updated and relevant information. Java works on Snow Leopard now and it will be supported for the life of Snow Leopard (already promised in the Apple announcement) and will probably not stop working immediately thereafter - or after the introduction of Lion 10.7 - so will be a viable development platform for some time to come. If, after the introduction of Lion, it appears that the Mac is no longer to be provided with Java from any source, developers can make a decision then, but to make the sort of comments that have been seen in this thread is fundamentally petty and tantamount to 'throwing toys out of the cot' in a childish paddy. If that's the way the individuals making those sort of comments wish to be seen, all well and good, but it doesn't appear to be a very professional way of going about things!

I know this wasn't my thread (as was pointed out to me earlier on!), but it doesn't belong to the whiners either! Have a nice day 🙂

Hi! Instead of commenting and giving your input (you noted from a prior conversation) do you think with all your knowledge you can help me? I am a very frustrated player and being new to this whole blog thing I need help. Feel free to gripe away about me but can you help me or point me to someone who can? I know with all my righteous conviction that this is a java issue.

This thread is about future support of Java, not about specific problems wrt an application. If you want specific help you should start your own thread. Otherwise your question and answers will become lost in this current unrelated thread.

I don't mean that I want my entourage to buy what I buy, I am saying that the reasons why my family members and friends bought Apple desktops is a lot because I convinced them to, which is ok.

But since this deprecation and the announcement that the app store will not contain any java software and rumors of iOS for desktops…bare with me here, my perception of Apple's intentions are a little destabilized. This "for me" look like an 180 degree change of direction toward last year embracement of Java. For most user it's ok, but for java developers, please tell me if I am wrong, it means a lot.

PS: I am not going to throw my laptop out of the cot (I did throw my WinXp out of the window, but that's a totally different story..)

I'm afraid that BobTheFisherman is right and this thread is not for you or your question (it isn't the only Java thread and, if you started a new, specific one, you could tailor it to your own needs). While I am not a Java developer, I understand that many of the contributors here are nervous about the future of the platform (Java-wise), but that is the extent of my knowledge in this area. Persevering with your question here is unlikely to elicit a satisfactory response; sorry!
