Numerous problems with iPhoto '11

I am having a nightmare with iPhoto '11

1. Every time I open it, it asks me to upgrade my photo library. When it closes it saves changes, but comes up with the same upgrade message each time.
2. It hangs when trying to import photos from a file.
3. It doesn't see my iPhone (not tried it with another camera yet, but not hopeful)
4. Cannot open books I've already made, and when I create a new book, nothing happens - other than adding a new book under the project list. However, even this disappears next time I open iPhoto '11.

I am currently regretting upgrading at all!

I have restarted the computer and tried repairing permissions.

It was totally unusable after installation and I essentially lost access to my library. The hangs were unbearable and it wouldn't even scroll or duplicate photos. I rebuilt the library a second time, repaired the permissions, trashed the preferences, emptied the caches, restarted the machine. It appears to be working now, albeit somewhat slowly.

Mac users expect software that works out of the box. At least in my case, iPhoto '11 did not.

FWIW, I don't want it to waste time retrieving comments on photos that have been posted to FaceBook . There doesn't appear to be an option in Preferences to shut it down, I hope that I'm either missing something or the option will be added soon.

I second what Bluemoon24 posted. See this site for directions on how to avoid problems: http://iphoto11.wordpress.com/

Although my experience was slightly different. I do have backups so I wasn't too afraid to make the upgrade leap. Here's what I did:
1. Prior to letting iPhoto '11 upgrade my library/database, I dropped it on BatChmod as stated in the site I referenced above.
2. I opened iPhoto '11 and let it upgrade my library. Once it was done, I verified that all my photos and data was still there.
3. I then tried importing photos from my iPhone... it went through the process and appeared to complete but it didn't seem to really import anything.
4. I quit iPhoto and repeated the process again with BatChmod.
5. After this 2nd run through BatChmod, I imported my photos again and it appears to have succeeded.

So it does appear to be permissions related to all the many files and folders that are stored inside the iPhoto Library (note to the unfamiliar: the iPhoto Library really is just a folder with lots of stuff inside -- ctrl-click > show package contents to view the goods).

Hope this helps.

I've tweeted John Gruber at Daring Fireball about this and sadly he seems to have decided it's not worth mentioning on his site, which I suspected because it paints Apple in a very bad light and he doesn't like saying anything critical about Apple these days. Shame. Maybe a few more of you could tweet him to try and get some bigger publicity about this? He's on @gruber

Same for tuaw.com.... normally they follow all new apple products, but they haven't said a word about the iphoto disaster.... I understand that a serious blogger has to differentiate singular problems from a mass phenomenom, but one only needs to look at the numbers.... a couple of days after launch the iphoto 11 section in this discussion board has 1/3 of the total number of hits that the iphoto 9 section received in total... should make one think.....

Can anyone confirm that the rights management issues are also related to the freezing problem iphoto '11 is having for some users? I was able to upgrade and open my library (though, I haven't checked if anything's missing). iPhoto '11 causes my white Intel iMac "24 to consistently freeze for several minutes, not allowing my to switch apps, force quit or perform any OSX functions. There is no color pinwheel indicator showing sluggish performance.

Is this an issue with graphic card memory usage iPhoto is having? Others pasted info on graphic card error code, but I'm not sure where they saw that error statement on my Mac.

Have had the same problems with everyone else and wanted to post so that maybe someone at Apple is reading. To be honest, I'm amazed they released the software because the iPhoto problem appears to be major. I've yet to get it to open without wanting to perform the upgrade each time. I've tried pretty much all of the solutions and basically am spinning my wheels. I know the solutions are beyond that of the most casual user and most of those don't seem to work. Hard to believe that Apple let this one slip by. I feel like I wasted my money on the upgrade because most of what I use is iPhoto and iMovie. I have lots of photos from a recent trip that I can't work with. After spending a couple of days chasing my tail, all I can say is, APPLE, GET OFF YOUR ***** AND FIX THIS!!!!

There is a article in Cnet reviews MacFixIT by Topher Kessler which talks about the Iphoto 11 problems. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-220020631-263.html
BASICALLY THE PRODUCT IS NOT READY FOR THE REAL WORLD. Recommend you revert to a previous version and stay there until Iphoto 11 is fixed.

Boy, Mr Jobbs will have to eat a lot of crow over this release.

Good Luck and Regards

iPhoto has been a huge disappointment. I have just upgraded to a Macbook Pro with which I am very happy, my only regret is that I didn't stick with iPhoto 9 not that I had a choice in the end since the new macbook pro came with it already installed. The list of inadequacies is endless but my main gripe is the emailing from iphoto. I hate the fact that one is restricted to those tacky templates but the fact that you no longer have the choice of what size to send the photos and that we are now restricted to sending only 10 per email. This is like a downgrade from iPhoto 9. Can someone please reassure me that Apple will be doing something to correct this and the many other faults with iPhoto '11? I wish there were more function options when using the right click on the trackpad/mouse?

I look forward to Apple addressing all these problems sooner rather than later.

There is no such restriction, nor are you confined to those templates. Select the pics you want to send and drag them to the Mail Icon. It will create a message with the files attached. You can resize the photos in the Mail Message window.

Books don't work, I almost lost my previous books from Iphoto 09.

Discovered that for unknown reasons the file that was called "Iphoto Library" in Iphoto 09 was now known as "Bibliothèque Iphoto" in Iphoto 11 (My Mac is in French language).

Did try the upgrade with a renamed library in French and some files did have a better conversion, as if Apple developpers had forgotten the localization issues. Nevertheless can't work with a partial software and the risk to lose my books.

This product is a disgrace.

I downgraded to Iphoto 09 and told all my friends to avoid buying Ilife.
