Numerous problems with iPhoto '11

It's important to remember that whenever there is an upgrade to the OS or any app there will be problems.

These problems may be caused by a glitchy release from the maker.
They may be caused when the process of upgrading reveals issues on the user's machine - like, in the case of iPhoto, a damaged database file, or minor HD issues
They can also be caused by User Error

Whatever the reasons the problems are real to the people having them. There is no reason at all to assume anyone on here is making stuff up. There are no "Haters" here, just people frustrated with the issues they are having.

IF you want to compare, roll back a couple of years on the forum to the release of 09, or back 18 months earlier than that to the 08 release and so on, and you'll see the same type of posts. The particular issues vary but the "Don't Upgrade!" posts proliferate.

Do the same on the OS forums and see exactly the same patterns.

Simply, every user should have at least one good back up before upgrading anything. That's the only protection against problems, whatever the cause.

Then it's down to troubleshooting the issues as they arise.

Thanks for the apology. The problem I encountered was a real problem which only occurred on my 2006 mac pro. The 20 inch and 27 inch intel imac did not replicate the problem. But those libraries were a way smaller in numbers and image size.

The solution offered by Old Toad, to reset pllist worked for me in such away that after some trials, but not after extensive testing the problem did not occur anymore.

However, moving to iphoto 11 means upgrading the library and this can not be undone. Be aware of that. I am pretty sure that Apple is monitoring this thread and looking into the fact if this is a real problem which need to be fixed.

My advice if you can wait with the upgrade for a month, that would be a wise decision.

I am always an early adopter and once in a time you have to accept that something can go wrong. Thats why I always have an original file backup from my music, photo's and essential other documents.

When I upgraded from 09 to 11, it actually deleted the 13,000+ photos in my trash. I use the trash as a holding bin as iPhoto 9 never deleted photos from its trash unless you specifically told it to.

What a nightmare.

I too "upgraded" to iLife 11 and for the most part it went fairly smoothly. The one issue I am having is with iPhoto and Faces. I'm not sure how many people use this, but I love being able to pull faces onto the Apple TV and look at them that way. The problem is that some of my faces are missing... about 15 of them out of 99 😟

Anyone else having this issue?? Anyone been able to solve it?!?!?!

I'm having terrible problems with my iPhoto 11 upgrade. Tried everything posted in this forum and nothing works. Every time I open the application, it requires the library be upgraded. I cannot import new photos from my camera either. I will revert to '09 from Time Machine. Apple needs to get right on this and either provide a recall/money back program or provide a reliable fix. Terrible release, worse than beta.

I am not a hater of Apple what so ever. Its a real problem, you really think that hundreds of people are going to just hate Apple over iPhoto '11? It does have major bugs but doesnt mean we are hating Apple. We are just complaining about how iPhoto '11 deleted precious photos that are almost impossible to recover if you dont have a backup. Its a very personal part of our lives and it is terrible when a known respectable software deletes our photo library!

Bottom line is there are many people on this forum that are Apple lovers, going back to 1989 and they are having problems too.

What I would recommend in your situation is not to upgrade just yet, wait until an update comes out, unless you want your photos to be deleted.

I had that problem until I followed a user on the forums here in a different posting, it required going into the iphoto library and delete about 5 files, including one that I think will stop the upgrading problem you are having, the file you should delete is the interruptedupgrade file.

For me, it worked, it doesnt upgrade everytime opening.

Search around the forums for the specific files to delete.

You won't find an Apple hater here; to the contrary. Just ordered the new MacAir. However, Apple needs to fix iLife and particularly iPhoto '11 before people start getting turned off. Photos are too personal and too important to be ignored.

I have not yet installed iPhoto 11, but I am curious about lost photos.

When I choose to open package, 'iPhoto Library', in the context menu, I find a folder called originals... here are all my photos. For those who have lost photos, is it not possible to go in this way or have the library files been erased or rendered unable to open?

Check the press, several articles mention the nature of the bugs for this release. Either way, considered yourself resonable warned and make sure you create a backup before upgrading 😉

How are you finding this new version? The only problem I've had is with getting a duplicate first letter issue when entering a new location name in the Places field.

It does take a little getting used to, however.

I was ready to buy/upgrade to Ilife11 today, but after finding out the info of numerous problems , I will have to put on hold for now....
I feel very sorry for all the people having problems ....I feel their pain.
So do you think a fix is in the works ? or nothing will be done by Apple ?

I am having the problem that if both my Wife and I are logged in, we cannot both have iPhoto 11 open at the same time. We have separate libraries, so it's not a library sharing issue. I thought it might be a permission issue, so I:

1)copied both libraries to an external Fat32 drive to get rid of the permissions,
2)then copied them back to the Mac,

still could not open my iPhoto if she had hers open and vice versa.

I wanted to eliminate all possible permission problem possibilities, so I:
1)re-formated the mac,
2)and did a fresh install of 10.6 off the retail DVD,
3)applied all updates,
4)and installed iLife 11 off the retail DVD.

I then just opened iPhoto under her account, created a new library, then tried the same under my account, and it still would not open. I just get the grey window with a pin wheel for hours.

I was having problems with iphoto 11, it would not quit. did the normal, repaired permissions, restarted.
Booted in Safe mode and iphoto would not even open, kept getting a crash report. Followed your suggestion of removing the plist, option+command, had to go find the iphoto library but all seems find for the moment. Things went bad after I email a photo, just locked up, doing a quit took 3-5 minutes with a crash report.
