iPhoto 11 fails to import videos recorded with iPhone

I record a video with my iPhone 3GS (iOS 4.1), then I connect it to my Mac.
In iPhoto 11 I choose to import all (or just the movie - doesn't matter). The photos are imported but the for the video iPhoto claims that the format file is unreadable.

"Unreadable Files: 1
The following file could not be imported. The file is in an unrecognized format.

/Users/Yaron/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Import/Masters/Roll 1/IMG_0098.MOV"

LOL, it does not recognize a MOV video file?!

Try looking in the …/Library/Quicktime path under your user home folder. If you can't see the user Library folder, from the Finder, select "Go To Folder…" from the view menu and type the path ~/Library. If you just got this MBP, and hadn't installed any QuickTime extensions, this solution is unlikely to be the solution for you. Good luck!

What worked for me, in case it helps others:

I am upgrading from an older iMac to a new Retina iMac, and in the process of (manually) moving over stuff from my old iMac to the new one, one thing I moved was Flip4Mac in my Applications folder. Then I noticed the same problem described above -- I couldn't import movies from my iPhone, and some movies in my iPhoto library wouldn't play. While Lance above recommended removing the Flip4Mac & Perian components from /Library/QuickTime, I didn't have any such components there. But I did have a Flip4Mac folder in my App folder. I deleted it, restarted iPhoto, and all seems to be working now.

Same issue. But unfortunately I am unable to find any folder or file named 'Flip4Mac' or 'Perian' on my new iMac.

I've just moved an old iphoto database file from my macbookair to an external drive. Now in the process of importing this into my new imac (late 2014 with retina screen), iMac iphoto rejects many .MOV and .MP4 files with the message 'The file is an unrecognized format'.

I was able to re-import (and play these rejected .MOV and .MP4) files back into my macbook without any issues. Both macbook and the new imac are running the latest Yoseite (10.10.1) and iPhoto 9.6 (910.29). 😟 Any other ideas?

You really need to start a new thread - this thread is about importing video from an iPhone which has nothing at all to do with your question and is much too complicated to get good help - click on the work "NEW" to the right of the iPhoto Support Communities at the top of this page and ask you question - include details like version of iPhoto and the OS and any recent changes, exact error messages, symptoms or other info that y=would help strange assist you

And as a quick note - NEVER Import an iPhoto library - it does not work and creates a massive mess and if you move the iPhoto library to an external drive you must first verify that it is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)

I had similar problem, but more peculiar: iPhoto wouldn't import MOV videos from iPhone 5 and iPhone 6, but would from iPhone 4S. Yep, very weird! I could import the videos from iPhone 5 and iPhone 6 to Finder using Image Capture, but iPhoto wouldn't import them from Finder either.

Removing the legacy Flip4Mac & Perian components from /Library/QuickTime and restarting iPhoto solved my problem. Note that removing just the Flp4Mac one didn't work, I had to remove Perian's as well.

Thanks a lot Lance!! I've read many other discussions, but this was the one that worked for me.

I'm using iPhoto 9.6 on OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite. I didn't want to update to the to new Photos app for Mac just yet.

I've found it best to simply bypass everything Apple at every single opportunity.

Instead of trying to get our overpriced phone to communicate with our overpriced laptop, which it is inexplicably incapable of doing, my permanent and 100% effective solution is to simply upload the video to Google Drive from my phone, and then download it to my MacBook.

Just like it's easier to listen to music by connecting multiple adapters instead of plugging direct into a 3.5mm headphone jack, apparently it's easier to send your video up to space and then back down to the laptop next to you than it is to plug it in and transfer directly.

Welcome to the future, brought to you by Apple. 🙂
