Imovie 11 startup crash

Same problem here... I'm desperate

me too!! has this been resolved yet? colour wheel spinning and crashes after it check iphoto for any video update and immediately closes down giving me an error report.

spoke to apple and they are not aware of any bugs. uninstalled imovie and reinstalled again with no luck. also have verified and repaired all permissions 😟

please help

It's a long shot, but I would give this a try:

*TEMPORARILY CREATE A NEW IPHOTO LIBRARY*
_ Quit all your Apps
_ Hold-down the Option key and click on the iPhoto icon
_ Click "Create New.." and enter a new iPhoto Library name -- I used "Empty_Library"
_ Click "Save"
_ Quit iPhoto

*FRESH LAUNCH OF IMOVIE*
_ Delete the iMovie Plist: /Users/ {your username} /Library/Preferences/
. . . . . . . . . . com.apple.iMovie8.plist
. . . . . . . . . . com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
_ Launch iMovie

Does iMovie starts-up properly without your old iPhoto Library?
If so, your old iPhoto Library may contain a video file / files that are not compatible with iMovie.

*TRY RE-LOADING YOUR OLD IPHOTO LIBRARY*
_ Quit all your Apps
_ Hold-down the Option key and click on the iPhoto icon
_ Select your old iPhoto Library from the list
_ Click "Choose"
_ Quit iPhoto
_ Launch iMovie

Does iMovie starts-up properly with your old iPhoto Library?
If not, try removing the bad video file / files from your iPhoto Library (if you know which one it is).
Just make sure to back-up those files before removing them from your iPhoto Library.

man, I was bummed when Apple didn't update iWeb. Now after the disaster I'm facing in iMove (won't even load a single thing, just spiny ball) and the dismal piece of crap now called iPhoto has become, (I haven't even launched Garageband yet!!) I'm SO thankful I at least have 1 program that I desperately need that works.

Apple, I want my $49 back. $52 billion in the bank, you can afford it.

I was having the same problem as posted here in the many crash dumps.

I tried the other fixes in this thread - deleting .plists, removing weird codecs, starting a fresh iPhoto library - all to no avail.

I have just solved this problem by doing the following:

1. Search the computer for "iMovie" and deleted the folders:

iMovie Preferences
iMovie Cache
iMovie Projects

etc - basically wiped any trace of iMovie from my computer (after backing up the projects that i wanted to keep).

Unfortunately I was non systematic in deleting this folders so cannot tell you which one was at fault - perhaps someone else can try.

However, iMovie starts fine for me now - as does the rest of iLife '11.

Could you please specify which Cache folders did you clear? every event and project seem to have their own cache folder...

I also had the same problem with iMovie'11 getting stuck at the first launch after upgrading from iLife'09. I'm an user of both iLife and Aperture. After numerous reboots a finally gave in and followed the instructions in this thread plus added some other steps.

1. Download Onyx and run the different cleaning operations (to remove old cache-files).
2. Run an OS X disc repair.
3. If you have Aperture; follow previous reply:
+Open your Aperture Library. (By clicking on Show the Package Contents) and delete "iMovie-Thumbnails" and "iLifeShared"+
4. Copy all iMovie directories to a separate harddrive. (iMovie directories created by iMovie'09 under "Movies" on the start-up disc.
5. Delete above directories.
6. Restart your computer.
7. Start iMovie.

This worked for me. But the hassle is that now I will have a tedious job to recreate my old iMovie projects, files and so forth. So I recommend that those of you who haven't upgrade yet to first read Apples recommendation on how-to copy/move projects to a separate disc. Delete original iMovie project folders. Upgrade, then re-connect the old projects.

I have try the same Workaround

I have a iPhoto Library with 44GB included some Movie files. Always after start iMovie 11 it try to collect the iphoto movie thumbnails->this works fine but after appearing the iMovie 11 Welcome screen, not responding.
I create a new iPhoto Library with only 8 Pictures and start again iMovie 11, works fine.
Close iMovie and iPhoto and switch back to the old iPhoto Library and start again iMovie, works fine. iMovie is no more crashing at this moment.

We don't have any answer from Apple about this issue?

I'm waiting for an official resolution for this problem and after 2 weeks from the release of iLife'11, i don't see Apple give us an explanation to this bug and nor a solution to fix it.

To the above solutions presented by users i used the one that we have to delete the directory of iMovie Thumbnails and iLifeshared from Aperture Library. It works till i open Aperture, next time...

I switch to Mac to avoid this kind of things and have a reliable system, and now...

I solved the problem by deleting the Perian.component located in "/Users/[my account]/library/Quicktime".

Maybe it could help.

Have tried the majority of many suggested fixes by other users to no avail. Been sending all my error reports to Apple. This is the first time I can truly say...what a disappointed experience! Anyone at all head about any potential fixes, or even an acknowledgement of issues? I've been scouring the internet looking for 'something'.

Important information : Perian was in "my account/library" because I choose the "only for me" installation but maybe it could be a good idea to check in "/macintosh hd/library/quicktime" in case of "all users on this computer" installation 🙂
