I have to agree the implemintaion of this seems terrible. I just don't use it.
Try this: open the photo and click info. then assign "new place" in the top of the googlemaps window. It will drop a pin "in the middle of nowhere. Now click in "window" in the menu then "manage my cocations" - now select "new location", drag it to where you want and rename it
I agree that adding a location with iPhoto 9.2.2 to a photo that does NOT have a GPS tag is not intuitive, and even obscure. iPhoto Help doesn't offer anything like how to create a new location by any phrases I have used. However, here is the most straight forward way:
-Select the picture and then click the Info icon at the lower right.
-In the header of the small location map at the bottom of the right side edit pane (you may need to click the triangle at the right on the header to display the map), click on top of "Assign a Place...". This will activate a blinking cursor/text box. Type in a location where you want to assign the picture. You're done unless you want to fine tune the exact location. If so, go to the next step now. However, if the location is not a named place like a city or monument, then type in a nearby city but not where a map pin exists already. A map pin will appear there and your photo is assigned to that location. The location does not have to be close, but it saves the distance you will have to drag the map pin to the correct unamed location.
-Drag the map pin that your photo is assigned to over to the correct location. Note, that you can ➕ or ➖ zoom the map to enable faster movement over a long distance or to get to precisely the spot.
-You can now rename the location ON THE MAP PIN to whatever you like by editing the location name on the pin. Click on the map pin -- it should turn yellow to denote it is in edit mode in the text box on the pin. Click somewhere off the map pin edit box to exit the map pin edit mode.
I agree. I don't see ANYWHERE to "add a new place", or any pin to move anywhere. Address or no address. Ticks me right off. I've looked everywhere. Gone through all the menus... etc etc.
When I click on the "assign a place" I get to a map. But there is no way of dropping a pin anywhere. Or adding an address either. Can't figure this out.
Where do you find these pins that can be moved?
I have pins that are assigned to other photos that were taken with my iPhone. But the pics I want to assign places to are either scans of old photos or pics that someone has sent to me.
HELP please!!!
If you are making the same mistake as I did initially: make sure to click on the field *to the left* of the arrow in "Assign A Place" and then type in the name of a place - example: San Francisco, CA - then click on that arrow to the right. This will bring up a map with a movable pin.
AHHHHH! There we go. *hit myself in the head* lol Sometimes these Macs are easier than I think. I'm used to using PCs. Thanks so much PJL500!!!😁
Yep I was making the same mistake! Thanks PJL500. They could have made a little hover menu....between right clicking, hovering and countless menus it's easy to get lost.
Assign a place????
