Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 broke SPSS - it cant find JVM anywhere

Has anyone any idea why this update has made it impossible for SPSS to locate Java Virtual Machine and what I can do to fix it? SPSS 18 for Mac (AKA PASW) no longer works! It's supposed to be able to draw charts and can no longer do this since this update.... I have tried the SPSS patch no luck.
This update only happened two days ago. The MacBookPro is 10.6.4 - I tried installing 1.5.0 and changing Java preferences to make it the top of the list and nothing.
CAN ANYONE HELP???

And this is why I keep multiple clones of the system, just so I can go back; and why I make sure I have a working clone backup from SuperDuper before applying patches, updates.

The details may change but the overall strategy for how to don't usually differ all that much, whether 10.5 or SL, able to 'back out' a change easily. Or only apply updates on the backup/test system; and of course, WAIT a week beforehand? Prevention and patience avoid a lot of problems.

Yes, I just finished installing the Java update on my main disk after having tested it on a clone last week. I didn't wait a whole week because all I was interested in was my Java applet and whether the folks at the other end had done due diligence. They had, I knew it a soon as the jar launcher kicked in and the applet loaded.

I'm having a problem with java tonight, I'm not sure if it's exactly the same, most of this thread reads like gibberish to me, so any help in layman's terms would be very helpful...

Firefox seems to be my only problem so far. I use it as my default browser. It asked me to update to the new 3.6.11 version tonight, so I did. After the install it seemed I had a problem with java, it wasn't working with the new Firefox. But I didn't have the latest version of that installed, so I check my Apple software update and install the newest java.

It's still not working, and I don't understand why. This is so frustrating. I'm going to smash my laptop against the wall in a minute. Please help!!

It's more simple than I expected...
Don't bother with #6 if you don't need it.
Don't bother with instructions for Cocoa-Java bridge
When you finish #5 go to /Applications/Utilities/Java Preferences.app, then launch it and move J2SE 5.0 64-bit and J2SE 5.0 32-bit above 1.60 versions. Launch your Java applet.

EDIT: Consider this a *temporary workaround* as it is unknown what will happen on future updates.

Let us know...

I'm on 10.6.4, and experienced the same problem with PASW (SPSS) 18.0. I successfully restored Java Update 2 using Pacifist, and now SPSS's graphing features work again.

Apple is apparently no longer hosting Update 2, but I was able to find it online. The filename is JavaForMacOSX10.6Update2.dmg. I loaded it into Pacifist. Unfortunately, Pacifist kept crashing if I tried to just let it install everything itself. So, I looked at every file it updated, and went through and removed the already-installed copies, then installed the Update 2 versions one by one in Pacifist. It took a good 15 minutes. After I was done, I rebooted, tried a scatterplot, and it worked.

Doing this involves messing around in your System and Library folders, and you can seriously mess up your install if you remove the wrong thing, so try this at your own risk. However, it did work for me. Good luck!

I'd be wary of downloading any Apple Java update from any site other than Apple itself. Your not going to be guaranteed security that it is the actual release of Update 2.0 unless it is from Apple directly. In the meantime, please tell your 3rd party developer they need to be 3.0 compatible to maintain a secure system.

I guess I got in under the wire on the update, it's no longer available as far a I can tell...
Another place to get a previous version would be your 10.6 Install disc.

Java for Mac is developed by Apple, for Apple. They've taken down the Release 2 download now.
I'm not sure why... it seems to me folks ought to be able to download Update 2 and revert. You may want to send feedback to send Mac OS X Feedback.

There is a fix available for SPSS to work correctly with the Apple Java 1.6 R3. It's available from http://support.spss.com - you'll need register with them if you haven't.

The solution was to replace libspssjvm.dylib with a version the SPSS support team provided. I've asked them what they are doing to get this fix out to others, but haven't heard back from them yet.

Good luck to my fellow SPSS users...
