Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 broke SPSS - it cant find JVM anywhere

Good news, indeed. And a lesson learned for the future, wait for them to be compliant before you download a new release.

It's not been published on their site, but is provided as a hotfix on request. To get it, you need to raise a support case. In the case I raised (number 741885), I simply put "Since Apple updated their Java version this week, I'm no longer able to draw graphs within PASW18. Please work with Apple to determine the incompatibility - it has been identified by a number of other users and logged on the Apple discussion forum. ". They came back to me within 36 hours.

I have asked them when it would be made more widely available, but haven't had a reply yet.

I went to SPSS support page but couldn't find the fix you were referring about. I've registered with them too, but still no luck in finding it.

It is not yet directly available for download. You have to make a case number for it, that's how I read what was posted here.

You did understand my message correctly. I'm confused by both you entries StatGirl - one sounded like you got my suggestion and the other didn't!

Most importantly, the fix did work.

*To be very clear, this exactly what I did...*
1. Got to http://support.spss.com/
2. Having registered first, click on 'Sign in now!' and logon.
3. Click on 'Submit a case' in the top left hand corner.
4. In subject field put something like +'PASW18, Apple Java 1.6 R3 Problem'+
5. Fill in the form and put something like this in the +'Description of Issue'+ box:
+'Since Apple updated their Java version this week, I'm no longer able to draw graphs within PASW18.+
+Please work with Apple to determine the incompatibility - it has been identified by a number of other users and logged on the Apple discussion forum.'+
6. Wait for the case to be actioned and you'll get an email back from SPSS when they've respond.
7. Follow the instructions they provide.

I understood it plain and simple. It is not available for normal download means, you have to find some other means. That other means is asking SPSS to give it to you.

Is there a chance you can provide (here) the instructions from SPSS?

Yes I understood - hence me raising the case with SPSS. But when I read your other post and said it's available from SPSS support homepage, that's when I thought it's available for download. Anyway, have raised the case and currently still waiting for their response.

I did exactly as RMHUK suggested and I got a reply from SPSS within a few hours. It is now fixed on both my machines. I can also confirm that the problem lies with Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3.
