I am interested in the 3G ipad but may not want to pay the monthly connect fee of $15. I am wondering how the GPS works if one does not have the data plan? i.e. might it work as well as a Garman for instance, setting aside voice turn by turn etc. So, will it acquire satellites as fast, will it update and stay locked as well?
Finally, does the assisted feature of the GPS chip require a data plan to perform its assisted duty
I was planning to get the Verizon version with their Mi-Fi on Thursday, but since the 3G is not built-in, must question whether it has the GPS chip. That would be a deal-breaker.
Your approximate location is determined using
available information from local Wi-Fi networks (if you have Wi-Fi turned on).
iPad Wi-Fi + 3G also uses cellular networks and GPS to determine your location.
Fredrick, the WiFi-only model does not have a GPS chip installed. That only comes with the WiFi+3G model. But, do read Illaass's initial response to the original post for a point about use of the GPS function.
You don't have to have the data plan, or pay for 3G service, to use the GPS. But there is a concern about mapping with just the GPS.
I do not have the 3G model so can't speak about experience with it, but I sure do like GPSs when traveling.
Ralph, thank you for the response. I wonder if anyone with 3G can give some estimates as to the amount of data use for some "common" tasks. E.g. using 3G & GPS for navigation while driving for about an hour. Surfing the web for an hour. I am trying to get a sense of real world costs for using the data plan.
