iMovie 11 does not allow the capture of a still from video
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!
How could such a basic feature be eliminated? Of course now I can make movie trailers, a cool feature, but...
iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.4)
iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.4)
Ok, this should work;
Get the clip that you want as a freeze frame. Create a new project.
Drag the freeze frame that you want to the beginning of the project.
Click "View" and choose, "Playback in Full-Screen Mode"
Full-screen mode will appear with your freeze frame at the beginning. This will go for 4 seconds.
During this 4 seconds, simultaneously hold the command, shift, and 3 keys. It will save the photo to your desktop.
from there, just drag it into IPhoto and you are set.
Hope that helps.
Thank you so much for this answer AFTERIMAGES.... It was killing me that I couldn't just get a picture and I had to export, import, etc... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
With cursor at the frame you want, right (control) click and pick Add Freeze Frame.
iMac 21.5", Mac OS X (10.5.6), G-drive, Canon HV20, Canon MP610, iPhone 3GS
Thank you for putting this video together. I messed around for hours trying to get around this incredible gap in the iMovie software and found this to be the most straightforward solution.
Hi everyone, I know this is a week or two old, but hopefully this link helps. All the best options to do this are indicated here.
Best of luck!

thanks to everyone who posted solutions and workarounds.
in iMovie Freaking HD approximately seventeen thousand years ago, this was not an issue. how hard could it be to have a command that goes "export this as a jpg now" with one click?
yep, they want us all to put down a bunch of cash on Final Cut.
though they generally remove my posts that suggest this sort of thing: Apple continues to disappoint. in a couple years, there will be no Mac OS, only some little cheezball iOS adaptation. "easy" to use. please, someone, take advantage of this hole that will slowly appear in the market! if Apple won't give us Apple products any more, maybe someone else can reinvent the Mac!
Afterimages -- excellent. Thanks. Bart
I can not help remembering similar discussions 2007-2008 with disappointed Nokia Communicator lovers when Nokia terminated the Series 80 for the Series 60 3rd edition. We lost a great projectmanager tool.
Nokia conquered the world with great software, and lost with user-unfriendly software.
very useful - this was the only solution that worked for me
