Well, I thought I'd add my name to the list. Will try to keep it brief.
Bought my 11" Air, 4 gig memory, 128 gig SDD drive, within a week of it's introduction and never had a problem with it not waking up properly for several months. I recall hearing about a fix for the problem but ignored the update because it didn't affect me. A month later it started up and I applied the fix. The sleep glitch would happen once or twice a week initially, then more often.
My symptoms were that I would open the screen, usually after a few hours being closed and on AC power, the screen would light up but neither the keys nor the trackpad would do anything and the clock was frozen at whatever time it was when I closed the lid. Initially, after about a minute or so, I'd swear and mutter some and push the power key until it shut down and rebooted. The only time I got a kernal panic was prior to the ROM fix.
Eventually I experimented with how long it would take to wake and the pattern I found was that it would become responsive enough so that it updated the time correctly in about 90 seconds. 30 seconds later I could move the cursor via the trackpad. At this point it's horribly unresponsive, I would click on a menu and nothing would happen, go to the dock, nothing. After 3 minutes or so, the menus would open up in the order I clicked on them, but the system was still ridiculously sluggish. I timed opening the Systems Preferences and it took a full 15 seconds to appear. Only about 5 minutes after opening the lid did the system run with normal responsiveness.
About 6 weeks ago I took the Air to the Genius, of course it wouldn't freeze for him so after checking the startup disc setting (which was highlighted) and mumbling something about the swap file the memory reads from on the SDD he had me leave it for the afternoon while they did diagnostics on it. They couldn't find anything wrong so advised to wipe the system and take note of any nonApple software that might be a cause.
Since then I've rebuilt my system 5 times, each time trying to narrow down possible causes. Firefox went first, then Flash, then anything Adobe since right after installing Times Reader the sleep glitch occurred again. Finally I'm down to all Apple software, nothing else, and a fresh update today and the problem still persists! At this point it's happening every day and often more than once a day.
I googled "air hibernate problems" today and finally got the tip about changing the hybernation parameters to 0 from 3, so far so good. I'm very hopeful this fixes it. There's a widget called Deep Sleep 1.2 that I highly recommend if you're having similar problems which does this without the Terminal. There is clearly an issue with hybernation and I also think it's related to changing wireless routers during sleep. (That was a frequent cause of my glitch.) The Air now wakes up promptly each time I raise the lid. One at a time I'm going to start adding my programs and other browsers and keep my fingers crossed. Hopefully soon I'll have the full functionality I expected to have when I got this thing.
Will check back on my progress. If it happens again you'll see me on CNN as I do the perp walk after accidentally decapitating an innocent pedestrian by flinging my very expensive, state of the art, top of the line MacIntosh Air laptop out my high rise window. . .
