new 11 inch macbook air not waking from sleep

A beautiful machine. When it is idol for a few hours, it does not wake up from sleep or a black screen or whatever mode it slips into when not being used.

Tried everything and nothing works to wake it up. No apple lite on on the outside of the screen either.

No option but to force quit and restart that way, and it keeps sending huge failure messages back to apple.

Any clues?

I received a call today from Apple Corporate. I went through the motions of contacting them about this ongoing issue with their MBA's.

They said they would refer their engineers to this thread.

They are aware of the problems I described, and gave this advice for any and all having this problem when speaking with tech support.

"Each and every case must be treated individually since not two people have identical systems. When speaking with tech support, if after you have done what they suggested and the problem still exists or returns, call tech support back and tell them to escalate the case PER CORPORATE, to engineers, and NOTE THAT YOU WANT TO BE CONTACTED BY THEM about the issues you are having.

I know all too well how frustrating this problem can be.

If someone in tech support is telling this is not a known issue with them, it is simply not correct.

Good luck.

OK. Thanx. That's exactly why I described my MBA's behavior.

I wouldn't be surprised if my MBA problem turns out to be a 'family member' of this 'frozen MBA' problem. But I'll contact Apple to see what's wise for me. Not to keen in backing up and reinstalling again on another (refurbished?) MBA.

FWIW the stories I've read here and elsewhere from folks that ended up getting their MBA's replaced said that they received brand new units, not refurbs. I doubt that they have enough refurbs to start doling them out just yet.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes!

I spoke with the senior tech support guy at AppleCare that handled my initial case of not waking from sleep and not going to sleep (all with lock ups and kernel panics). I told him of the various forums where people have said that the problem is with Flash player in Safari. I told him that since running the program ClickforFlash I had not had any more problems. He told me that the engineers at Apple were well aware that Flash causes the problem and were working on a fix. He suggested I upgrade to OSX 10.6.7 as this was supposed to fix the issue. I had already done that but had not tested it out so I disabled ClickforFlash and so far (after three days) I have not had any problems. He also suggested that if this did not fix the issue the use Chrome until it was fixed.
Maybe Steve got the engineers to create this problem as we all know he hates Flash LOL

Go to settings energy saver and then uncheck "automatic reduce brightness before display goes to sleep"

I used to have the same problems with my MBP and that used to solve it. I just experienced the same problem with my new macbook air. Does any one know why there is still an option called put the harddisks to sleep when possible? (my air has flash so no need to put the hd to sleep).

it has been over two weeks, since I set hibernate mode to -25. I also installed Click to Flash just in case as this forum has mentioned issued with Flash.

so far Macbook Air has worked perfectly, have not had to hard reboot one time. I was having the issue twice a week.

Will keep message board posted if issue returns, but so far i am a happy camper!!

I've been having this same problem on my 11" Air for the last few weeks. I do not, nor have I ever installed Flash on this machine, except as part of Google Chrome. I only use Google Chrome when I specifically need Flash, which is rarely. I've also set hibernatemode to 25, but the problem continues. So, for me, neither setting hibernatemode to 25 or keeping Flash off my machine have made any difference in regards to this problem.

Well, I thought I'd add my name to the list. Will try to keep it brief.

Bought my 11" Air, 4 gig memory, 128 gig SDD drive, within a week of it's introduction and never had a problem with it not waking up properly for several months. I recall hearing about a fix for the problem but ignored the update because it didn't affect me. A month later it started up and I applied the fix. The sleep glitch would happen once or twice a week initially, then more often.

My symptoms were that I would open the screen, usually after a few hours being closed and on AC power, the screen would light up but neither the keys nor the trackpad would do anything and the clock was frozen at whatever time it was when I closed the lid. Initially, after about a minute or so, I'd swear and mutter some and push the power key until it shut down and rebooted. The only time I got a kernal panic was prior to the ROM fix.

Eventually I experimented with how long it would take to wake and the pattern I found was that it would become responsive enough so that it updated the time correctly in about 90 seconds. 30 seconds later I could move the cursor via the trackpad. At this point it's horribly unresponsive, I would click on a menu and nothing would happen, go to the dock, nothing. After 3 minutes or so, the menus would open up in the order I clicked on them, but the system was still ridiculously sluggish. I timed opening the Systems Preferences and it took a full 15 seconds to appear. Only about 5 minutes after opening the lid did the system run with normal responsiveness.

About 6 weeks ago I took the Air to the Genius, of course it wouldn't freeze for him so after checking the startup disc setting (which was highlighted) and mumbling something about the swap file the memory reads from on the SDD he had me leave it for the afternoon while they did diagnostics on it. They couldn't find anything wrong so advised to wipe the system and take note of any nonApple software that might be a cause.

Since then I've rebuilt my system 5 times, each time trying to narrow down possible causes. Firefox went first, then Flash, then anything Adobe since right after installing Times Reader the sleep glitch occurred again. Finally I'm down to all Apple software, nothing else, and a fresh update today and the problem still persists! At this point it's happening every day and often more than once a day.

I googled "air hibernate problems" today and finally got the tip about changing the hybernation parameters to 0 from 3, so far so good. I'm very hopeful this fixes it. There's a widget called Deep Sleep 1.2 that I highly recommend if you're having similar problems which does this without the Terminal. There is clearly an issue with hybernation and I also think it's related to changing wireless routers during sleep. (That was a frequent cause of my glitch.) The Air now wakes up promptly each time I raise the lid. One at a time I'm going to start adding my programs and other browsers and keep my fingers crossed. Hopefully soon I'll have the full functionality I expected to have when I got this thing.

Will check back on my progress. If it happens again you'll see me on CNN as I do the perp walk after accidentally decapitating an innocent pedestrian by flinging my very expensive, state of the art, top of the line MacIntosh Air laptop out my high rise window. . .
