new 11 inch macbook air not waking from sleep

A beautiful machine. When it is idol for a few hours, it does not wake up from sleep or a black screen or whatever mode it slips into when not being used.

Tried everything and nothing works to wake it up. No apple lite on on the outside of the screen either.

No option but to force quit and restart that way, and it keeps sending huge failure messages back to apple.

Any clues?

Mine fails to wake up from sleep, so I hold down the power button to kill it. Then I hit the power button again to re-start, and I get the chime, but then a series of three loud beeps, which repeat. The only foolproof way to fix the problem is to drive it down to the Apple Store, where it always works perfectly.

Without reading all 25 pages of this thread, has a consensus developed around what to do about this?

You coulda read mine a page previous <grin>

There's a widget called Deep Sleep 1.2 that I highly recommend. I was about to eBay mine. It's worked perfectly since I killed the stupid new way Apple decided to hibernate the Air.

There are other solutions which didn't work for me, the startup disk setting, the reset pram or whatever. Perhaps they have slightly different configurations than mine. I have the 11' Air w/ 4 gig memory and the 128 memory chip hard drive.

You can go to the terminal to tweak the sleep setting, but the Deep Sleep widget fixes it for you, just set both sleep modes to "quick" and you got it.

Just wanted to share that I had this problem constantly from December until around June, then faced blissful working (I believe a software update solved it), but now it appears to be happening again once again.

I just installed Linkinus, which was the only notable change to my lappy. Starting to think that it has something to do with specific tasks that only certain applications run some of the time?

At any rate here are the latest symptoms for me:

- Two nights in a row now it required me to wait aobut 20 seconds before it would wake from sleep

- Any time I let the screen dim, the screen stays dim for about 20 seconds before it will light up again.

I'll get a bit more worried when my warranty is nearing it's end, but for now I'll keep experimenting with the suggestions presented here.

MBA 13" 1.8GHz i7

Had the same issue but have tracked it down to Parallels.

Things are ok if the lid is shut for a short time but if the MBA goes into deep sleep the Mac will turn on to a black screen (back light on, screen black) and it will not boot further. After this pont it is necessary to perform a full reset by holding down the power key.

Have contacted Parallels support and they say it is an issue if you use Parallels 7 and OSX Lion. They offer no further comment as to if this will be fixed or even if they consider it a bug just that you should put the VM into suspend before shutting the lid.

I have tried this and it does seem to work but I seems a backwards way of working as I've never had to do this with previous version of Paralles or OSX.

Suspect Apple and Parallels have more work to do together to see this through.

New MBA, new copy of Parallels same old crap feeling of things not quite working.

MBP 17"

Just sussed this problem out

Having recently upgraded to OSX Lion and Parallels 7 i started to have the same problem with the screen not waking up after sleep

As long as the screen brightness is set to maximum it will wake up. If the setting is any lower than maximum the screen will not wake up.

However, you do not need to power off and back on. If the screen hasn't woke up, just press the screen brightness button ( f2 ) and it comes back to life.

Hope this helps anyone with the same problem thinking they got to spend hours on a support line.

Think i should get a job at Apple and show them how it should be done :-) !!!!

My MacBook Pro had the same problem, and I have been googling for two days for a solution. Now my MacBook pro is fixed. I learnt that not all the problem can be fixed by one solution, and I also noted ways to fix this problem. I collected the solutions into one blog post. I hope it may help you.

I had the same problem after i had my macbook air 11. It was not waking up after i close the lid quite often which was becoming unbearable. I am using VirtualBox to run a guest windows xp and i was thinking that was causing the problem. After checking this thread some 2 months ago, i tried changing the paramter about hibernate, but that did not solve my problem.

I decided to give a shot for checking the effect of Safari+Flash couple. So i installed chrome (i was using safari + firefox) and starting using only chrome and firefox and never used Safari. For last 2 months i did not have any problems. I do not want to try Safari back just to make isolated tests and be sure %100 that is the problem since i dont want even one more hard reset to a device i gave over thousand box. An application developed by Apple to cause such a series system level problem is another story.

In early March I ordered an 11" MBA with the 1.8 i7 and 256GB HD. The unit would not wake from sleep with a couple hours after being started for the first time. Tried all the key stroke solutions with Apple online service to no avail. I took it to a certified apple repair provider who instructed to have it replaced. Got the replacement and within one day the same thing occurred. I have returned the second as well and have not decide to try a third machine.

In both cases I had installed Adobe Premier Production Suite. Could that be the issue? I have seen posts regarding similar issues caused by Adobe Flash (which was probably installed with the suite).

I would like to give another one more try but have been extremely frustrated to this point.

Any help would be appreciated

I had(!!) the same issue with my new MBA 11" and all those solutions like re-selecting the startup disc or SMC reset didn't work for me.

So i looked further and found 2 solutions that worked for me.

1. switching hibernatemode to an option where nothing is written to the hdd. (I don't remember the number but you can find it on google 😉). This worked fine, but especially over night you lose much battery because the RAM has to be powered. So i tried something else.

2. turning of the auto backlight. What I noticed was that when my screen stayed black only the backlight didn't turn on. At a closer look I could see the login-screen and the mouse etc. So I thought perhaps the automatic backlight causes the problem. I turned it of and no more black screens in 1 month now.

Hope I could help!

I had the same problem and the only way to wake the Mac was by plugging it into a power source. Apple replaced the unit after the second trip to the Genius Bar and I haven't had the problem occur on the new Mac yet. I was wondering if anyone who has this problem uses a sleeve or case for it with a magnetic bar? I ask because I bought a Brookstone sleeve specifically for the 11" MacBook Air and it has a magnetic close that runs the length of the sleeve. I tended to just shut the lid without powering down and carrying the unit in the sleeve. Is it possible that the magnet was the cause of the problem?

The ONLY THING which solved my problem - MacBook Air 2010 not turning on from sleep - was killing the hibernatemode. I tried everything, all the tips we can find here or elsewhere. Nothing worked: reseting SMC, PRAM, selecting startup disk, reformatting, reinstaling i.OS, everything.

But, THIS TRICK HAS WORKED:

  • Launch Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
  • run pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
  • If you see "hibernatemode 3", you may go on the process, or else you need to stop and try other solution
  • run sudo pmset hibernatemode 0
  • Enter your admin password
  • After that, my computer always start when I open the lid. Perfectly.

Did you try Deep Sleep? It allows you to change the hibernate mode without Terminal.

    http://deepsleep.free.fr/

You basically did the same thing the widget did.

"• Regular sleep mode: chooses the sleep mode which will

be used when the computer is sent to sleep by the Apple

system menu, or when its lid is closed on laptops.

    • Widget sleep mode: chooses the sleep mode which will

be used when the widget is clicked on.

For each of these two fields, three settings are available:

    • Quick: No hibernation features are enabled. Also known

    as mode 0.

    • Safe: Hibernation features are only used when the computer runs out of battery power.

Also known as mode 3 or 7.

    • Deep: Full hibernation. Also known as mode 1 or 5."

Glad you got it fixed, was quite frustrating for me. I notice now that the new Airs will now simply die when the battery runs out, just like the good old days <grin>
