2 x "helpful" is not enough

Something that could do with a change: in my opinion I should be able to mark an unlimited number of posts as helpful, especially if they are.

I have seen posts that go to both extremes.

Niel often posts a Yes or No and seems to get points for them. (Of course unless you know where they are (you can't search for "yes" and "no" in the Apple Search) you can't show people.

The talent is spotting when people want and need their Hand held and when they want straight facts.

No real complaints here really. Just niggles that have already been expressed about getting people to use the system. (Hence the suggestion on some icons/pics that could be posted in the new system)

What's the secret?

For me it was finding an Area that had very few regulars, being interested enough for my own ends and posting like crazy.

Of course aiming to be helpful and polite.

I thinks the pleasantries are important though but you could cut down on any "Thank you for the Point/Comments" posts.

Stay away from the Feedback area as threads like this degenerate into more "Community" type debates. 🙂

Post in only those threads that you know the answer, rather than helping someone through an issue with suggestions until enough info is gathered to make a prediction on the fix.

Just some thoughts.

my ratio is about 3 : 2

Mine is about 1:1, I do a lot of hand-holding posting with newbies and I also post in threads where no points are awarded, even though I get lots of "thanks, you solved my problem" etc etc, but no points.
I am happy to get points, but I am just as happy to get a heartfelt thank you without the points (really!).
This thread is a case in point, no stars will be awarded, and I haven't counted how many posts I have made, but I need to chime in when I feel I have something to contribute (although others might not agree that I contribute).

Only post counts were recorded with Tech Exchange. In 2000 when Tech Exchange was transformed into Apple Discussions (using the WebX software) that practice continued but post counts were not carried over. In the spring (northern hemisphere) of 2001, if I remember correctly, there were some changes made to the system and post counts were again reset to zero.

+Cowabunga! Batting average .750! That's Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, and some more recent ones on steroids combined. What's the secret?+

Being my charming self???? Although some people may disagree with that ... 😉
And that "batting average" is good? I'm serious - we don't do baseball where I come from, so I'm very ignorant on that subject.

there is an entirely different problem: many posters do not award any points at all (even though their last post is something like "thank you, that did it") and, in many cases, also do not mark the question as answered. Many also never even post back at all, so no one knows if the suggestion/advice helped or not. That seems to be happening more and more, so increasing the availability of points would not solve the point you made (unfortunately).

Exactly. How can we can people to award more yellow and green stars? I love to help, but not getting any stars does start to grate after a while.

Perhaps we could all add to our signatures something like "Don't forget to mark questions answered when this is the case and mark posts that were helpful or solved the issue as such by awarding stars."

What do you guys think?
