For me the latest version worked fine until I downloaded 10.3.183.7 which was release 12 days ago apparently:

Today my fan runs at 5k RPM when watching Flash, this is frustrating...
I also remember these issues with Flash in Windows machines too, draining battery and running hot, I always used complaining about it, Steve Jobs is right about Flash...
I need to correct my post, i mean 2500rpm, its gotten up to 3700 with hard core use. Love it. But i posted my findings backwards.
I just bought a Macbook Air 13 for my first ultra-portable after considering Asus Zenbook, etc. After thinking why I should buy a 'wannabe' when I could afford the real one, I bought the machine with which I typed this post.
One thing that almost get me disappointed with this purchase is this whirling/buzzing noise that seems come from under the keyboard. What I believe, as a premium product (even with tag 'designed in California by Apple'), this is a very serious defect. The thing is that the noise is not that kind of humming like generated by usual notebook. It is almost sounding like my soft snore. I almost regret I didn't get the Zenbook or the Vaio. Hence, I searched in Google and find this thread.
Hope Apple can do better than this.
PS: While I dislike the noise, the keyboard is something I enjoy.
I would send your Macbook Air back to get a new one. It is definitely not supposed to make a "whirling/buzzing" noise (at least not when idle).
(Try updating drivers, specificly your flash Driver) Mac's are not too fond of Flash stuff 😉
Mine is 100% silent in idle, i have had this Macbook Air for some months now, and it has become my trusty, stable everyday working machine.
There isn't even any increase in fan speed when watching a movie, with my macboook in the bed!
For more demanding tasks i have my gaming rig.
Yeah, the 2011 airs dont have this noise issue.
Mine was a 2009, and it was a fa noise for sure.
You deffinatley need to
Take it in.
omg the Tony person is a genious. I did what he said about looking at the "system monitor" thing and "Preview" was using almost 60%. As soon as I closed it, the fan went off. Thank you so much!
I did the same thing and it worked! I was getting 5 quick clicks every 4 seconds. Closed it up and whacked the bottom left of the MBA and clicking stopped! Thanks for this...as I'm on my secopnd Air and didnt fancy going into the store...phaffarama....
hey next time, check yer Activity Moniter... It shows how your CPU is allocated= i notice that some web browsers, even if you close them, still take up around 90-100% of your CPU, explaining the heavy noises...
I Have a 13" MBA Mid 2013. I started it up this morning and heard the fan running at full speed and after i restarted it still continued, also the battery icon had a X in the battery and said "No Battery Present" and keypad backlighting didn't come on. So i left it on unplugged so the battery would drain. It didn't take long only a couple of hours with the screen brightness on all the way. when I plugged it in and started it It worked perfect.
Let it Die then restart!!!
Help!
I have just purchased my first mac book (bought the air) and noticed a low but penetrating pitched sound coming from what seems the side of the machine.
Its driving me crazy and can't wait to close the computer down at night. Reading some of the arlier posts, seems like apple have not done anything about the problem!
Has anybody managed to fix their issue?
I have a mid 2012 13" MB Air. My fan has been running like crazy recently and the culprit seems to be itunes. According to the activity monitor, running itunes was using 99% of my CPU. Seems like overkill for listening to music.
This EXACT same thing just happened to me. I was freaking out, no fan, just the clicks. Then I read your post and THUMP, it's fixed! lololololololololllllllll. Good Game, No Re.
I had Google back up and google drive running in the background. Quitted those programmes and no fan noise.
There wasn't a thread like this in the MacBook Pro section, but thought I'd comment here anyways.
I have a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro 13" that was working perfectly until now.
I had the same problem as "bwrl" on page 8. There was a clicking noise that happened about every 4 seconds. I installed smcFan Control and it reported that my fan wasn't moving at all. So I opened it up (Note: My MacBook is long out of warranty, so do as you will) using the iFixIt guide as refference: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2010+Fan+Replacement /4302.
I found lots of dust inside so I cleaned it using Compressed Air and a pair of Electrostatic Tweezers I have. I noted that the fan was indeed not spinning if pushed so I used the tweezers and gave it a little push. It jumped back into place and now spins. After putting everything back together smcFan Control reports it is spinning at it's usual 2000 RPM.
