I've run into the same problem (buzzing, 2000rpm fan based noise on the left side of my 13" MacBookAir3,2). A few points by way of summary as I think people raising the issue are being unfairly dismissed in some of the past responses.

1. This is not an issue with cpu load. The buzzing sound is consistently present even with ~ 90% or higher system idle. As best as I can tell it's always there as it's caused by the fan running at the standard (?) 2000rpm. This is not a case where the fan is being kicked up by running graphics/compute heavy applications.

2. At the same time, this sound was not noticeable during the first few weeks of use. I purchased my Air in mid-December. When people say that previously their Air was "silent" I think they mean silent to all practical purposes. Before this the fan noise was simply not loud enough to draw attention. I can verify this since I regularly used my Air in exactly the same context - in a very quiet room, on my lap, running the same mix of apps (email, browser). I would definitely have noticed the sound earlier.

3. Hence, I do not believe that this a normal, background type fan noise that MacBook Air users should simply accept. First, because I know it wasn't there in the first few weeks of equivalent usage. Second, because it really is annoying. Different people have different degrees of sensitivity to this - granted. I probably won't hear it at a large conference with the computer on my lap, or in a train, or in a busy office. However, I most definitely do and can hear it in the contexts that are important to me: in a library, in an archive, or at home. I made a conscious decision to purchase the new 13" Air because of its silent SSD and because I knew from previously owning a 13" MacBook and a first generation Air that Apple laptops can be (effectively) silent under low/little load. That the fan noise suddenly (in my case, literally from one day to the next) becomes irritatingly noticeable is really disappointing.

4. Possible causes? I'm not an engineer, so I can't claim a good answer. My personal hunch is that the fan is either not seated as tightly/correctly as it was when the laptop was purchased (although I have not dropped or knocked my unit) or else is unexpectedly wearing out in some way. It's interesting that owners of 11" units are noticing this too. Maybe it uses the same model fan? I just don't know.

5. Solutions.. Unfortunately, I can't think of any except to take the laptop to an Apple Store and make one's case for getting a replacement. I will try to do this myself here in Germany. At the same time I can totally understand why someone would want to open the case and try to fix it oneself (did this help btw?). Once you register the sound in a quiet environment, believe me, it becomes really annoying and frustrating.

It would be very helpful to hear from someone who has been able to get their unit replaced or could otherwise offer more information. It may be true that Apple staff doesn't follow these forums. At the same time, once the problem does reach their ears, I am sure that the forums are consulted to get a sense of the scale and severity of the problem. Please continue to post your concerns and experiences so we can all come to some kind of resolution.

It's the fandesign. Theres no such thing as "lack of oil" 😉 no modern fan would need any - but it didn't hurt, so I spilled a few drops and it reduced the intencity of the hum a bit. I could also reduce the echo chamber effect (resonating backplate) by padding it a little (make sure that the pin in the middle of the plate doesn't pop out because of pressure) and allthough the high pitched noise went down a little, the sound characteristic stayed the same.

That the fan hasn't any filter beforehand (just the gap of the black plastic bezel through which you can feel the warm air coming out - apart from that it is wide open inside), might be good for airflow - but the fan is prone to get dusty over time (give it half a year), so buying the screwdriver is not the dumbest thing you could do...

As far as I could tell, opening the back doesn't break any seals. And you will do it anyways. Once the price of SSD storage comes down and you replace the SSD.. 😉

hi there,
i 've got a 11" air since a week or so and it's the same problem.
I noticed a little noise on the right corner but i don't know if it's the fan. It's like 3 or 4 littlle scratchy sounds and it happened around every 5 minutes. It's like the fan try to strat but can't make it.
I don't know, does someone found a solution via apple or alone?
Thanks
Cyril

I keep having the problem. The noise is annoying and drives me crazy. I need to use the computer to work on my Master but with this noise, is almost impossible. I've tried a lot of options. Bought and Installed software like TekTool (the idea was to try identify what was the problem), talked to Apple (they told me that the problem is the software I am using?!!! - Lotus Notes. What concerns me most is that Apple has a censor on duty always ready to remove any comment I make that is not in favor of the company. Any critic is quickly removed from the forum. Even not being aggressive, they quickly remove. I live in a country where the this type of actions were linked to dictatorship governments and I know how hard is to live with someone deciding what you can or cannot write. I really do not understand this behavior from Apple. I hope they could fix the problems as quick they remove my postings.

As it was mentioned in prior posts, you can use smcFanControl 2.2.2 or iStats Menu 3, to monitor and set the fan speed. In my 13" MBA, the fan noise starts at 4000 RPM... if you hear noises below that threshold, then you should take your computer to an Apple Shop; the other reason could be that you are using software that stressed computer to 4000 RPM since the startup.

Sorry, you should read before... following your judgement, I would be annoyed by the simple fact of the noise just by design of the MBA's case and to assure that the noise is completely independent of the fan's speed both are completely wrong because: 1. the higher the speed, the higher the noise (everyone would agree with it) and 2. You haven't opened your computer and check it, but still you assume that it's a general design since you've got 1 replacement with the same issue not considering the rest of the people who have not replaced the computer and they are not annoyed by the noise.... it seem's quite subjective. On the other hand, I just mentioned that if your laptop makes noises under 4000 RPM, something is wrong with the computer. I'm sorry but anyone who owns this machine can hear the noise of the fan circa such speed... and I know 10 owners who can claim so, as well...

" In this topic, we speak about the "natural" noise of the fan which is completely independent of the fan's speed." So please define, the "natural noise" because it's not clear... I would say that a fan in order to work needs to rotate at a certain speed...

I think starting to establishing that so called "natural noise" with a reference, such fan's speed, you should have a valid parametre at the beginning because it is very vague right now.

"" I would be annoyed by the simple fact of the noise just by design of the MBA's case and to assure that the noise is completely independent of the fan's speed" -> Yes, we are annoyed by this fact."... indeed, no wonder why...
