Sophos Free home edition anti virus protection

Sophos has issued Free home edition anti virus protection. http://www.sophos.com/products/free-tools/free-mac-anti-virus/

From the various articles it seems to be aimed at user's perception of threat to Macs rather than any actual harm.

Does it do good? Is it worth installing? I see some old posts that Sophos users experienced slowdowns. And a lot of posts that this isn't necessary.....

Has anyone had an infected Mac? (+just curious+)

iMAC, Mac OS X (10.6.4), Lexmark x5470 USB printer; IPOD classic; IPOD Shuffle

Steer clear of all this crappy malware - you don't need it, it will cause you problems.

You are playing word games. As you ought to know, because I've explained it to you several times, most people believe that the word "virus" is equivalent to the word "malware", and that a trojan is a kind of virus. This may not be accurate, but that is how it is. If someone asks me for a Kleenex, I don't tell them I don't have any because the box sitting next to me says "Puffs". That's just stupid.

No, I'm not 'playing word games'. As YOU know, the distinction is very important, because the strategies are very different. One reason for the widespread confusion is the proliferation of misleading advertising.
Your example is flawed - virus is absolutely NOT simply another word for Trojan in the way 'puff' might be for 'kleenex'. A better example would be trying to sell someone antibiotics to help prevent colds. Of course, anti-biotics are ineffective against colds, but never mind, most people are confused about that. In addition, there are other legitimate uses for antibiotics.
I cannot understand why you don't think this is a serious problem and continue to throw confusion on the fire.

I don't know why you are consistently avoiding the point. I am not 'anti-av' - you know perfectly well that I am in favor of using it for the purposes that it is useful. My 'agenda' is honesty around marketing it. I understand you are unconcerned about that, that's fine, but don't criticize people simply for being concerned about honesty and education.

Then stop telling people here that it isn't useful, and stop complaining to us about the marketing. We didn't write the ads. Go complain to the AV companies, and let folks advise people here on how to solve their problems without the constant sniping.

Wow - Thomas - I am not 'complaining' to you, I am warning people who ask questions about anti-virus software that there are scammers out there with deceptive ads who will tell them they need to install anti-virus software to actively scan and protect them from Mac viruses.
As I have pointed out, and told people, I do think av software can be useful, just not for what it is advertised as. But you know that, what puzzles me is why you consistently misrepresent what I am saying?
Please dial down the rudeness. Thanks.
