Nissan bluetooth and iPhone

The problem that I am having is that I can't use my bluetooth reliably with my iPhone 4. It worked fine with my iPhone 3G. What I get is that 50% of the times, I can't answer an incoming call. It simply does not pickup. When it does, it triggers a bug on the iOS that makes my ringer get stuck in the first seconds of the ringtone. The only way to get the call in from that point is to put the phone on speaker mode and revert it back. Once this happens, the ringer will be messed up until I reboot the phone and this issue has drained by battery twice already.

I already reset the phone 3 times, the last time as a new phone. The problem still prevails. Anybody else having this issue. I took my phone to the Apple Store Genius Bar, and they diagnose it as normal.

I am frustrated too. I brought my phone to the store last month to see if they could do anything about the bluetooth issue. They couldn't do anything about that, but I got a new phone because the home button was sticking. Unfortunately a new phone did not solve the problem for me. iOS 5.1 does not fix it either. I really wish I could just revert to iOS4. This is just ridiculous.....its been like 6 months now without a fix

After pairing about 5 iPhones to my 2008 G35, I think I am able to pin point the root cause and the workaround. The issue seems to be with pre 2010 Nissan/Infinifty models (in 2010 they added a2dp).The drops will happen with these models and when iPhone also paired with (a

different) A2DP capable device (for stereo music streaming). If you want to keep the pairing with the A2DP device, then get an A2DP gateway and hook to the Aux ports of your Infinity. Beside completely eliminating the bt drops during handsfree calls, you will also add music and turn by turn navigation streaming to your car which is pretty cool. The other workaround is probably to delete the pairing with the a2dp device but I have not tried it myself.

This is the gateway I purchased
http://www.amazon.com/BlackBerry-Remote-Stereo-Bluetooth-Gateway/dp/B00170***0/r ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332186077&sr=8-1
And you can hook to aux with any 3.5mm to RCA concertor you get in radioshack. You also need to power it using any cigagreete lighter to usb plug, then pair it according to instructions.

I am a nissan sales consultant, the issue is niether on the side of Apple or Nissan. Basically over the last few years the bluetooth standards have changed repeatedly and dramatically. Look on http://www.nissanusa.com/bluetooth/ and enter your vehicle information for compatability lists and some further information.

What is going on with the pre 2010 models is simply that they were made to work with all current standards and the standards expected over the next few years, the iphone was in it's infancy then and now has a lot of tech (both hardware and software) working on different frequencies and using different coding that was not thought up before then so there are connectivity issues (eg. you cannot connect multiple iphones on certain models if they are from the same run of phones and running the same OS and carrier ... they are to similar for some bluetooth systems to understand, they will work in the Murano/Maxima/etc that have navigation because the system is more advanced). there are workarounds as discussed previously.

As far as CONNECTING A SINGLE PHONE: first make sure that your phone is not trying to connect to a bluetooth headset as well as the car, it can't do both. When setting up the car you may need to delete the headset AND THEN PAIR WITH THE CAR, then re-pair to headset and manually switch between the 2 in your bluetooth menu on the phone.

Hope this helps

Sorry Eric, but you don't know what you are talking about. I have a 2008 Frontier. I can can establish blue tooth just find with any iphone that has not been upgraded to ios 5.0 or later. If the phone is 5.0 or later... it's useless. The problem is Nissan. They either refuse or are unable to upgrade their older factory bluetooth devices to work with the latest bluetooth protocols. To make it worse they essentially LIE on the website you linked to above because if you punch in 2008 Nissan Frontier and Apple it will show than Iphone 4 is compatible. Well only if it is an old, used phone that never got it's IOS updated. Any new apple phone is going to come with the IOS already updated.

So Dear Nissan... you are either incompetent or you just don't give a hoot about your customers after they have bought your vehicles.

You and Nissan need to get your act together and make sure this isn't an issue as it clearly is. Are you saying that we need to update cars as often as we upgrade phones? Second point is that I have several

bluetooth devices that predate the Nissan and work fine with the new phone. I had an issue with Plantronics but they have since sent out a update for the device and it now works fine. The Nissan should work and if it doesn't work you should have a way to update it. That's just nuts what you just said. Not to mention the fact that it works sometimes and when you're driving 75 you now have to fumble for the phone just to answer it because the car doesn't always answer it. Maybe Nissan will get sued over selling a bluetooth that doesn't work and maybe you'll end up on the stand with your stupid remark and who do you think will win. Everyone but you!!!

Class action Nissan, make it work and get rid of people who make excuses.

So first loving that your attacking me like I decide how the cars and phones are manufactured. Second you showed that it is the phone not the car, it's the updated OS that is supporting new bluetooth protocols (if you look ford, honda and others are having the same issue), ones that were not around in 08. New bluetooth protocols are not 100% backward compatable, if apple made the phone with the ability to use the old protocols to work with previous devices there would be no problems. I know that my fiance's headset doesn't work with her phone now that she updated so there are other devices (other than cars) that are having issues.

I am not an expert on all of this, just wanted to give the info that I had at my disposal because I do get this issue pretty often here. My advice would be for as many people as possible to complain to nissan and other car companies so that they will update on systems that can be updated (hard drive navigation vehicles do have updates that include more than just maps and I beleive one of them is actually for phone connectivity but I haven't heard back from my rep if this specifically is addressed), and build other systems that can be updated.

1st me and Nissan need to get our act together? ... i don't design or build the cars, i gave you the info i had at my disposal

2nd As I said above other cars and devices are having issues, you got lucky that your devices are still good

3rd you don't HAVE to answer you phone, wasn't that long ago phones didn't exist and the world turned just fine

4th if you CHOOSE to answer your phone your the one breaking the law and putting people in danger

Update - bad to worse:

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

After updating to 5.1.1, my phone lost the ability to stay connected (read: paired) with the car. I had accepted the fact that incoming calls no longer rang (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2499619?answerId=11960001022#11960001022&messageID=11960001#11960001?messa geID=11960001) but now, they drop off the bluetooth and go through the iphone speaker, then repair back to the bluetooth, then drop again. This makes it impossible to have a conversation.

Not ringing in the car - annoying.

Not staying paired - unusable.

I have called both Apple and Nissan with no hope in sight - both were about as insightful as our friend Eric above. Oh, and on that note, I was just in a 2007 Acura RDX for the past couple of days and guess what paired fine w/ the iphone on 5.1.1? (Hint: a 2007 vehicle that had the OLD BT "standards"). So, Eric's suggestion that it is neither apple nor nissan's fault b/c technology changes seems not to apply if you are driving an Acura... odd indeed. Also, even if Eric were right, and it is the case that the iPhone has just outgrown our pre-2010 Nissans, it is a total mystery to me why Nissan then continues to "recommend" the iphone for use with those vehicles. http://bit.ly/Ofcsa7

Anyway, the unfortunate news is that since I got an iPhone 4, it has failed to work properly in my 2007 Altima - and now it is wholly unusable. I have tried everything I can think of to make it work – deleting and repairing, killing background apps, fresh install on phone – with no positive result. One thing is clear, Apple changed their Bluetooth commands/algorithms/instructions/code/whatever and it no longer works in my beloved Altima.

This is a Sad Day For America...

Since I started this thread I was never able to fix our car however I did buy a new Nissan Xterra. The Xterra has the exact controls as does my 2007 Nissan Maxxima and it works flawlessly. I noticed the device in the Xterra is in behind a cover near the rearview mirror. It's a very small device and do you think there is any chance the device in the older Nissan's could be exchanged for a new one that is updated.

It's really too bad that Nissan is of no help.

I had a complaint about another Plantronics Bluetooth that was brand new and didn't work correctly but Plantronics did email me after some time to let me know they had a software fix. It now works fine.

Aug 17, 2012 11:35 AM in response to Cristian Rodriguez

Well imagine my surprise when I did a quick internet search and found over a million hits for "Nissan" "Bluetooth problems"

Anyway as a point of info for everyone, I just bought a 2012 Nissan Altima Coupe with all the packages (tech, nav etc...)

I have an iPhone 4s, 5.1.1, Verizon

When I first started using the car the Bluetooth paired just fine, it would automatically reconnect when I reentered the car, the answer/talk/hang-up etc... all worked.

Then one day I get in the car and my audio starts playing from my phone but it sounds, "sped up" almost like I was holding down a fast forward button , it would play a second of sped up audio, then silence, then sped up audio for one second, repeat over and over again. Sometimes it gets "fixed" if I switch sources (am, fm, xm, music box etc...) sometimes I have to either turn off the car Bluetooth (which you can only do when not moving) or turn off my phone Bluetooth to reconnect and then sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The good thing is it eventually will work for some time but then again sometimes the connection will randomly drop, or some functionality is lost (audio plays but I can't see the song/album/artist info)

Anyway, I find it amusing that this is neither Apple's nor Nissan's fault according to the responses here I've read from reps for both. I am sure if we asked the Bluetooth SIG they would tell us it's Apple's and/or Nissan's fault. Typical in our society today, it's always someone else's fault, no accountability, no willingness to actually solve the problem until enough people scream and shout that it eventually get "fixed" that is until it breaks once again some time down the line. I guess the "solution" is to keep hounding Apple and Nissan (and apparently other car manufacturers) until someone does something about it, but I don't think I will hold my breath. I guess I will just have to hope continually pairing/unpairing my phone resolves the issue enough so I can utilize the functionality both companies so loudly proclaim as important features they provide, that is until they become silent and point fingers at the “other guy” when it fails to work at all.

Hello all...in paticular Bob and Mike... I have some good and intersting news on this topic...only took a year. 🙂

Iphone 4 and IOS 5.x and Nissan bluetooth modules = bad

Iphone 4 and IOS 6.x and Nissan bluetooth modules = WORKS JUST FINE NOW.

UNBELIEVABLE

Over the past year I did a lot of testing with about a dozen different Iphones.

The problem according to my testing was that if you have a NIssan with stock Bluetooth, and Iphone 4 with IOS 5.x you were having bluetooth connection issues... it would repeatedly connect and disconnect making a call nearly impossible.

If you were able to revert your IOS back to 4.x you were fine again.

If you upgraded to an Iphone 4s you were fine.

but unbelievable I just tested and Iphone 4 that had IOS 5.1.1 that DID NOT WORK in my Frontier with a freshly updated IOS 6 and the problem is GONE.
