iPad Case Recommendations

Hi all,

I'm looking for an iPad case that will alow me to prop up the iPad for use in the kitchen, family room, etc. I don't intend to transport it outside, so hardcase options like the Otterbox aren't necessary. I also read several somewhat negative reviews about Apple's iPad case, so I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who can recommend some decent options. Thanks, Don

I really like Apple's case. I have another one that I bought while I was waiting for the Apple one to ship. It's nice enough but bulky. Sorry, don't remember the brand. The Apple one is protective while adding very little bulk. No, you can't dock the iPad with the case on. But that would have been true of my other case as well. I wouldn't say the Apple case is beautiful, more like aesthetically neutral. I stuff my iPad in my bag every day. After months, the case shows no signs of wear.

The Apple case is fine and will do what you need. Only downside is that if you're using it in the kitchen, it has a slight micro-fibre like surface so if you spill anything on the case it's not easy to clean it. Having said that, I've tried other cases and I still keep coming back to the Apple case as it does the job and it's very light weight.

Mine has had food and drinks spilled and splashed on it in various restaurants and pubs during "business meetings" (grin) and it has done it's job admirably taking a bullet for the iPad many times. Cheers!

so if you spill anything on the case it's not easy to clean it.

I find it pretty easy to clean with a damp cloth if you can get after it right away. I agree that dried spills would probably be tougher.

I can see why people don't like it--I don't care for the sharp edges and I agree with those who find the overall quality un-apple-like, but it does the job well enough.

Personally, I think the iPad case is ugly. My problem is with the exterior finish. It's like a suede finish and, as such, really shows blemishes, smudge marks, etc. I bought my iPad about a month ago and took a close look at the Apple case - owned by several friends - before deciding to go looking elsewhere.

After looking at dozens I settled on the Cyber Acoustics IC-1000BK. It's very nice looking, made of black leather with a smooth, matte exterior finish that does not show smudges and cleans easily (they also have the same case in red leather).

I like the way it holds the iPad very securely with soft plastic tabs at the four corners and then leaves the rest of the edges and all controls accessible. It has two small elastic straps at corners that can be used to keep the case securely closed - a feature I rarely use, but something you may want to employ during periods when the iPad is not being used. It also has an internal, wide elastic strap to put your hand through while holding the iPad in portrait mode - another feature I don't choose to use.

I found this for sale at a number of internet sites, but ended up buying directly from Cyber Acoustics. Since they ship for free, their price + shipping was as good as any.

In the interest of full disclosure: I have absolutely no personal or business connection with anyone at Cyber Acoustics.

I looked around in stores and online and decided to go with the black Apple iPad case. I think it provides enough protection for normal use while not adding much weight or bulk. It is also easy to grasp. I find that I can clean it with the included micro fiber cloth. The local Apple store didn't have any in stock so I ordered it online and received it within three days. Not bad.

Enjoy Don! Just a note here... there is a weird looking tab on the backside of the case that is designed for the edge of the cover to tuck into. You'd be surprised how many people don't get that. Once you flip the top cover around and tuck it into the tab on the back the whole case becomes a very rigid stand for the iPad. You can then lay it down for typing at a slight angle or stand it up on the short edge to use it as a display or digital picture frame.

I've seen complaints here about thin edges, etc. Personally I like it as it keeps everything very low profile and doesn't detract from the whole "iPad experience" for lack of a better term. I tried similiar cases but they all added weight or bulk and just didn't feel right. The apple case also makes it very easy to hold the iPad, again, without bulk or weight. Cheers!

P.S. It's a right royal pain getting the iPad OUT of the apple case so thankfully I almost never need to do that so just a heads up. On the plus side, I know it's not going to slip out of the case! (grin)

I agree the Apple case is the best. A couple notes... The edges are "sharp" for a reason. It gives the iPad a little more bounce if you drop it. I have droped it a couple times, and when the edges hit the floor, it doesn't hurt the iPad at all.

Also, the first few times it is extremely hard to get it out of the case, but once you "break it in", it's not hard at all... and getting it in becomes quite easy.

Hope that helps!

I have tried a few..i had the apple case and it was ok...but I wanted more, so I bought a very inexpensive leader case on Amazon.com and it has been very nice, but I wanted more...!

So I just found one and I ordered it has an integrated bluetooth keyboard.

You can find it at www.brookstone.com

Do a search on "Bluetooth® Keyboard Portfolio"
